Alexandrova, Raducanu face off to settle early-season rivalry.
Ekaterina Alexandrova is set to take on Emma Raducanu in the second round of the Italian Open, their third meeting of the season and one that could tilt their growing rivalry.
Alexandrova, currently world No. 20, has been on a tear this season, winning her ninth singles title at the Linz Open over Dayana Yastremska in three sets, followed by frequent semifinal runs and a solid 17-10 YTD record. The Russian advanced to the semifinals in Doha, scoring notable wins over Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka before bowing out to Amanda Anisimova. More recently, she reached the semifinals at both the Charleston Open and Stuttgart Open, pushing Pegula to three sets and falling to Jelena Ostapenko.

Raducanu’s 2025 season, meanwhile, has lacked the same rhythm. Aside from a strong quarterfinal showing in Madrid, where she notched wins over Amanda Anisimova and Emma Navarro, the Brit has struggled for consistency. She has failed to advance beyond the third round in any other event this season. She’ll need to dig deep against an in-form Alexandrova in what promises to be a pivotal test for both players.
Alexandrova and Raducanu are locked at 1-1 in their head-to-head, each dishing out a first-round exit to the other earlier this season. Their rivalry kicked off at the Australian Open, where Raducanu prevailed in two fiercely contested tiebreak sets. A month later in Doha, Alexandrova struck back with a composed straight-sets win of her own. As they prepare to square off in Rome, the stakes rise in this Italian Open clash, which will serve as the decider in their young but compelling rivalry

While Alexandrova’s strong form and deeper tournament runs give her the edge on paper, Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has shown she can rise to the occasion, especially against higher-ranked opponents. If the Brit finds her footing early and keeps her unforced errors in check, she could turn this into a close battle. Expect a competitive encounter, with Alexandrova holding a slight advantage based on recent consistency.
Prediction: Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets
Ekaterina Alexandrova: 11/20
Emma Raducanu: 29/20
