A look at the key ATP clay-court tournaments lined up for May 2025.
With April in the books and Casper Ruud claiming his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the Madrid Open, the clay-court season heats up in May. But first, let us take a quick look back at April’s tennis action:
Carlos Alcaraz edged past Lorenzo Musetti in three sets to win Monte Carlo, while Holger Rune took down Alcaraz in a hard-fought straight-sets battle in the Barcelona Open final. Alexander Zverev followed with a dominant showing over Ben Shelton at the BMW Open. Then in Madrid, Ruud capped the month with a three-set victory over Jack Draper to win the biggest title of his career.

Four key clay-court events highlight the ATP calendar in May. First up, the Internazionali BNL d’Italia (Italian Open), a Masters 1000 event in Rome, runs from May 7-18, with Alexander Zverev set to defend his title.
From May 18-24, two tournaments take place: the Hamburg Open (ATP 500), where Arthur Fils returns as defending champion, and the Gonet Geneva Open (ATP 250), with Casper Ruud as last year’s champion. The Hamburg Open, which is usually held in July, has been rescheduled to May on the 2025 ATP calendar.
The month concludes with the year’s second Grand Slam, the Roland Garros (French Open), scheduled from May 25 to June 8, where Carlos Alcaraz will defend his title in Paris.

There’s no need to spell out that the Italian Open and Roland Garros are the headline events of the month. The former is one of the three prestigious clay-court Masters 1000 tournaments, while the latter is in a league of its own, being a clay-court Grand Slam.
