No. 5 seed Jack Draper beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 7-6(4) on Friday to book a spot in the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open final. The 23-year-old continued to make an upward climb in his quest for world dominance, and reached his second Masters-1000 final of 2025 in the process. By entering Sunday’s summit clash, Draper has now broken a historic British record that showcases his multifaceted skills.

Jack Draper has beaten Tallon Griekspoor, Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul, Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Musetti en route to the final. In Friday’s clash of the titans, the 2025 Indian Wells champ displayed a baseline masterclass and remained headstrong in the second set tiebreak to emerge victorious. “I feel like both of us, our quality didn’t really drop from the first ball,” Draper said after the match. London’s very own southpaw will face Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final.

Having already made finals on grass and hard courts, Draper’s Madrid Open 2025 success means that he has now reached an ATP final on every surface. At the age of 23, the 2024 US Open semifinalist is the youngest British tennis player in history to reach a final on every surface of the ATP circuit. A win over two-time former Roland Garros finalist Ruud will give the No. 5 seed his first trophy on the hallowed red dirt.

On Monday, Draper will be crowned as the No. 5 player in the world for the first time in his career. He is also No. 2 in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin – provided he can capture the championship at the Spanish capital, he will jump to within 100 points of Carlos Alcaraz. Coincidentally, Draper and Alcaraz are the only two players born in the 2000s to reach Masters-1000 finals on different surfaces in the same season.

Jack Draper and Casper Ruud are yet to meet on the ATP Tour, ahead of their blockbuster contest on super Sunday. The Norwegian blazed past Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 7-5 in the other semifinal. It will be a match of contrasting styles and mindsets – while Draper will play attacking cross-court heavy baseline tennis, Ruud is going to grit it out and wait for the right moments to pounce. Fans can expect several backhand to backhand exchanges.

“I [controlled] pretty well with good serves and volleys,” asserted the Brit after his final four win over Musetti. “I think I started serving really well and just learned what makes him uncomfortable in that moment, and not letting him dictate me. That’s something I was really happy with today, I think I problem-solved really well.”
