On Saturday, 04/05, the Detroit Pistons (42-34) will host the Memphis Grizzlies (45-32) in an inter-conference match-up. The Pistons have been parked at the sixth position in the East for the most parts, whereas the Grizzlies have slipped to sixth in the West. Will the slumping Memphis give Detroit a hiccup here? Read through the preview, total predictions, and player props here.
Pistons: They need Cade Cunningham
The Detroit Pistons will enter the match after playing against the Toronto Raptors the previous night. They will look to cull a two-game losing streak against Toronto. Before the current losing streak, they had won three in a row, including the win against East table toppers, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thus, the team has done rather well without their leading scorer and playmaker, Cade Cunningham. However, oppositions are bound to figure them out if CC doesn’t return soon.
It is a testament to their shot-creation depth, as the team has benefitted from Tim Hadaway Jr.’s inspired play. Their defense has been inconsistent lately, and it is a huge reason they are unable to crack the top-four rankings in the East. Detroit has an average schedule to finish the season, and will need Cunningham healthy come playoff time. They are most likely going to draw the New York Knicks in the first round at the current pace. Will they be able to spring a surprise or two in the postseason?
Expected Starting Lineup
PG: Dennis Schroeder | SG: Tim Hadaway Jr. | SF: Amen Thompson | PF: Tobias Harris | C: Jalen Duren
Key Injuries/Updates: To be updated later.
Grizzlies: Uninspiring performances lately
The Memphis Grizzlies will enter the game after a 2-point win against the Memphis Grizzlies, as Ja Morant hit the game-winning layup. The win broke a four-game losing streak, and they are 2-7 in the last nine games. They lost some of these games even with their ace, Ja Morant. But more than that, their defense has been the worst part of their recent struggles. These are alarming signs right before the postseason.
However, the offense has a lot of promise. The Morant-led squad has stacked up 121.8 PPG (2nd) during the season. Turnovers have been a huge problem, though, as they have coughed up the ball 15.8 times per game(3rd worst). These fumbles also make their defensive job harder. Despite all these shortcomings, the team will fancy a deep postseason run because of Ja Morant’s high-scoring and clutch ways.
Expected Starting Lineup
PG/SG: Ja Morant | SG: Desmond Bane | SF: Jaylen Wells | SF: Jaren Jackson Jr. | C: Zach Edey
Key Injuries/Updates: Brandon Clarke is OUT for the season.
Both teams are high-scoring, regularly breaching the 120-point mark. Meanwhile, they have been highly inconsistent on both ends. Cade Cunningham’s presence will be huge in this game to match Morant’s production. Overall, I expect both teams to score at least 117 in this match.
Jalen Duren to grab over 11.5 rebounds: The athletic center has hovered around the 10 rebounds per game mark this season. I believe he will clean up 11+ boards here.
Ausar Thompson to score over 14.5 points: The efficient Pistons forward has picked up his scoring in Cunningham’s absence. He has put up 14.7 points per game in the last four games, and I expect him to continue the trend here.
Ja Morant to score over 27.5 points: Morant has scored 26 or more in three straight games, indicating he is in takeover mode after being upset about his lack of touches under ex-coach Taylon Jenkins. He can be in the 28-32 range here.
Scotty Pippen to score over 13.5: SPJ has averaged around 12 a game since January, and his numbers haven’t dropped significantly since Morant’s return. He can be in the 14-16 range here..

The Pistons would love to have Cunningham in this game, but he might not be out, considering the tilt against the Raptors the previous night. But wouldn’t it make sense to rest him against a struggling squad and trust the high-performing guard-wing combo while using his talents against Morant and Co. At any rate, Memphis may spring a surprise here if Cunningham is out, considering they will have fresher legs.
Safe Spread Pick: Grizzlies -3.5 for +125 at BetMGM
