Dallas Stars Extend Sam Steel with Two-Year Contract

Anamika Shrivastava

Steel's new deal runs through 2026-27 as he continues to be a key two-way forward for the Stars.

The Dallas Stars are keeping forward Sam Steel around for the long haul. General Manager Jim Nill announced that the team has signed Steel to a two-year contract extension worth $4.2 million, with an average annual value (AAV) of $2.1 million. The deal kicks in for the 2025-26 season and runs through 2026-27.

Steel has been a key contributor for Dallas this season, posting 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) in 53 games while playing a crucial role on the penalty kill. He leads all Stars forwards in shorthanded ice time, averaging 1:54 per game, and ranks fifth among NHL forwards (minimum 60 shorthanded minutes) in limiting power-play goals. On pace for a career-high in assists, he’s also delivered 46 hits—already tying the second-most in a single season for him.

Since making his NHL debut in 2018, Steel has played 392 regular-season games with the Stars, Minnesota Wild, and Anaheim Ducks, amassing 134 points (47 goals, 87 assists). His best season came in 2022-23 with the Wild, when he tallied career highs in goals (10), assists (18), and points (28). In the playoffs, he’s added seven points in 24 career games, including a strong run with Dallas to the Western Conference Final in 2023-24.

Before turning pro, Steel dominated in the WHL with the Regina Pats, racking up 338 points (123 goals, 215 assists) in 258 games and earning Player of the Year honors in 2016-17. He also helped Canada win gold at the 2018 World Junior Championship, registering nine points in seven games.

A first-round pick by Anaheim in 2016 (30th overall), the Ardrossan, Alberta native continues to establish himself as a reliable two-way forward, and the Stars are banking on his impact for seasons to come.

I’ve always loved writing and storytelling, and hockey gives me a perfect stage for endless stories to tell. Whether it’s breaking down a game, analyzing a big trade, or capturing the emotions on the ice, I bring the NHL to life through words. So what’s the best part you ask? Watching the action unfold and turning it into something fans can connect with. To my readers: Hockey is more than just a game—it’s the highs, the heartbreaks, and the moments that make us jump off our seats. So, keep cheering, keep debating, and never stop loving the madness of the sport!
