Dallas will need a strong offseason to have any hopes of making the playoffs in 2026-27!
It was one of the rare offseasons in Dallas last time around. A new change was made in the coaching department as former Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was elevated as the Head Coach after the firing of Mike McCarthy.
Much of the offseason’s theme for the Cowboys focused on edge rusher Micah Parsons and his contract standoff with the organization. The result: Parsons got shipped off to Green Bay, and Dallas lost its best defensive player of the last four years.
That said, the Cowboys went on to make a big signing, bringing in wide receiver George Pickens alongside CeeDee Lamb to form a strong one-two tandem. Pickens had his best season to date, but even that was not enough to propel Dallas to the playoffs. The Cowboys finished second in the NFC East with a 7-9-1 record. The question now is whether or not they can regroup quickly and get back to winning ways.
As usual, the Dallas Cowboys will be playing the customary 17 regular season games through 18 weeks of football, which includes one bye week. The Cowboys, who belong to the NFC, will have the luxury of playing 9 games at home and 8 on the road in the upcoming season based on the NFL’s alternate year policy.
As per their schedule, the Cowboys will play 6 games against their three divisional opponents from the NFC East. Within the same conference, they have 4 games against the NFC West, and will also play 2 games against second-placed teams from the NFC North and the NFC South due to their own second-place finish from last season.
Dallas will also play 4 games against a division from the other conference, that being the AFC South. Along with that, their last game will come against the second-placed team from the AFC North this time.

For the upcoming 2026-27 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys will have a mid-tier strength of schedule (.493). As per sources, the Cowboys rank number 20 on the list of toughest strengths of schedules.
As per the last season’s results, the Cowboys will have 8 games against teams that made the playoffs. First and foremost, they will be facing the (11-6) Philadelphia Eagles twice as their divisional opponents. Then they have the tough NFC West, in which the 49ers (12-5), Rams (12-5), and Seahawks (14-3) all made the postseason. Other teams that made the playoffs in the 2025-26 season include the (13-4) Jaguars, the (9-7-1) Packers, and the (12-5) Texans.
And while the Giants and the Commanders did not make the postseason, the NFC East rivalry games are always intense. The Giants have hired former Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh, which will make things quite interesting in this division.
There is a lot of work to be done in the offseason for the Cowboys. Whether or not they keep George Pickens, whom they have franchise-tagged, could be a season-defining decision. But, even then, Dallas needs to find quality on the defense, especially with the departures of top players such as Parsons and Trevon Diggs.
In terms of offensive production, Dallas ranked inside the top 10 in scoring last season, which is an excellent stat. However, they were dead last in scoring defense, allowing 30 points per game, while also finishing in the bottom 5 in turnover differential of -9.
Plenty of things need to be addressed in the offseason, but the one advantage they have is that the Giants and Commanders are not ahead at this moment. A favorable strength of schedule could help them make their way back to the playoffs.
Our Prediction: Cowboys make the playoffs in the 2026-27 NFL season.
According to the latest Super Bowl odds on FanDuel, the Dallas Cowboys are (+3000) to win Super Bowl 61 next season.
The last time the Cowboys made it to the Super Bowl was way back in 1996 when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. Since then, it has been a long wait for Cowboys fans to see their team back in the big game.
Judging by their current roster and all the other teams ahead of them, it seems their wait may be prolonged at least by another year. Having missed the postseason the previous season, the franchise will have to find some answers quickly.
As we saw once again in the recent Super Bowl, defense wins championships, and that is where the Cowboys have loads to improve upon.

As for the odds to win the Conference, the Cowboys are at (+1600), as per FanDuel. This currently puts the Cowboys in eighth place in the NFC behind the likes of the Seahawks, Rams, Packers, Eagles, Lions, and more.
As of now, the Cowboys are not in the most ideal position to make the postseason, let alone challenge for the conference. The NFC West teams, including the Rams, Seahawks, and the 49ers, are all miles ahead at this juncture. Divisional rivals, the Eagles may have slumped a little last season, but make no mistake, that roster is still one of the more balanced ones in the league.
The Cowboys’ odds to win the NFC East are set at (+275), as per DraftKings. That puts them second only behind the Philadelphia Eagles.
As far as the NFC East is concerned, this division has been mostly a two-horse race between the Cowboys and the Eagles of late, with the exception of the Commanders, who won the division in 2020.
The Eagles are expected to continue their pursuit of yet another Super Bowl run, and they will pose the toughest challenge in the NFC East. As for the Commanders, last season was a complete down year after making it to the NFC Conference Championship game in the 2024-25 season. That said, quarterback Jayden Daniels, if healthy throughout the season, could lead the team back to better days.
And last but not least, the New York Giants will have plenty going for them next season. Jaxson Dart will start his second year under center, and Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo should be back to boost the offense. Plus, the hiring of John Harbaugh means the Giants will operate under a new direction.
After one season in charge of the team, Brian Schottenheimer should have a better idea of how to proceed in the offseason. Dallas will have to hit on some quality signings, and especially look to strengthen its defense if it is to pose any sort of challenge in a competitive conference once again.
