Crystal Palace scripted a historic moment at Wembley as they edged reigning Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to clinch their first-ever Community Shield title. The match initially ended in a 2-2 draw and had to be decided through penalties which did not go in Liverpool’s favour.
It was a fitting follow-up to Palace’s FA Cup win in May, underscoring their growing stature under Oliver Glasner. Liverpool started brightly with their new arrivals making an impact. However, Palace’s resilience and Dean Henderson’s penalty heroics ensured that the Eagles lifted the silverware in their debut appearance in the competition.

The game exploded into life in just the fourth minute when debutant Hugo Ekitike finished clinically from a Florian Wirtz assist, giving Liverpool an early lead. Palace hit back soon after as Ismaila Sarr drew a foul from Virgil van Dijk to win a penalty. Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up and converted it coolly.
Liverpool regained their advantage another time in the 21st minute. Jeremie Frimpong provided a looping delivery which was likely intended for Ekitike but found its way into the net. The first half saw both sides trade blows, with Henderson and Alisson making key saves to keep the contest alive.

Liverpool squandered opportunities to extend their lead. Ekitike missed two gilt-edged chances. Palace grew into the match, and in the 77th minute, Adam Wharton’s pinpoint pass released Sarr. He slotted home the equaliser off the post. The late stages saw both teams press for a winner which didn’t come.
The match headed to penalties where Mohamed Salah missed the target. Meanwhile Henderson saved the shots from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Substitute Justin Devenny held his nerve to convert the decisive kick, sealing Palace’s historic first-ever Community Shield trophy win.

Henderson’s heroics along with Sarr attracting a penalty proved decisive for the Palace to make history. Speaking after the game, Henderson said: “I love the big moments, I love being in that pressure moment… We showed we can compete with the best.”
For Liverpool, who spent close to £300 million on signings this summer, it didn’t click. Their revamped squad featuring record signing Wirtz and other high-profile recruits need time to adjust. For Palace, it was undoubtedly more than just a pre-season win, it was a statement of intent for the season ahead.
