Blackhawks' forward Smith returns for the 2025 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Catch the action as Chicago faces St. Louis on New Year's Eve
Experienced forward Craig Smith has the chance to participate in today’s Winter Classic after all. The Chicago Blackhawks stated they’ve activated Smith from injured reserve after he sat out the previous eight games due to a back injury.
Smith is anticipated to return to his position on the Blackhawks’ fourth line alongside Pat Maroon and Lukas Reichel. He netted six goals and 10 points in 26 matches before suffering an injury in mid-December.
Unlike several of his teammates in Chicago, this won’t be Smith’s first experience skating in a Winter Classic. He took part in the 2023 Winter Classic featuring the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the Bruins but did not register any points after playing just 5:32 in the match.
In addition to the 2023 encounter, Smith remained without a goal during the 2020 Winter Classic while playing for the Nashville Predators. As today marks the third outdoor game in his career, Smith will be tied for 46th place on the NHL’s list of outdoor games played.

While Smith’s scoring has slightly improved compared to the previous year with the Dallas Stars, his defensive performance has displayed some weaknesses. He generally maintained an on-ice save percentage ranging from 91% to 93% in all situations, but it has dropped to 88.7% this season with the Blackhawks.
Fortunately, he carries minimal responsibility when fit, enabling some defensive weaknesses to be ignored. Nonetheless, as one of several experienced players acquired last summer, Smith has a crucial role in assisting with the development of his younger teammates.
