Connor McDavid Reaches Yet Another Playoff Milestone During Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final

Connor McDavid joins elite company!

To say that Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid is one of the greatest players in the league today is an understatement. The Oilers’ forward has taken his game to such heights that even legends of the past, such as Wayne Gretzky, have acknowledged his skills and talent, and believe that he truly is the next ‘Great’ of the game.

So, every time McDavid steps on the ice, there is an expectation that he will either break a new record or reach a milestone. Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final was no different as the Oilers’ star attained yet another landmark accomplishment in his already historic career.

Connor McDavid Reaches 150 Playoff Points

During the third period in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, McDavid scored his first goal of the series, and in doing so, he became the third fastest player in the history of the NHL to reach 150 playoff points. McDavid has achieved this feat in just 95 playoff games.

This latest achievement puts the Oilers’ captain in rare company among the best of the best. The only two players to have beaten him to the record are Mario Lemieux, who took 86 games, and the legendary Gretzky, who took an astonishingly low 68 playoff games.

The 2024 Conn Smythe Trophy winner has 1 goal and 6 assists from 5 games in the Stanley Cup Final series so far, giving him 7 points in all. However, through his 21 postseason games this year, he has tallied 33 points, including 7 goals and 26 assists. Overall, his 150 points in the postseason include 44 goals and 106 assists.

Oilers on the Brink of Losing

Despite McDavid’s efforts throughout the playoffs this year, he and the Oilers now find themselves at the risk of losing the Stanley Cup Final for the second year running. Edmonton’s loss in Game 5 has put the Panthers within 1 game of lifting the Stanley Cup and ending the Oilers’ dream once again.

The three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner has played his part in this series with 7 points, but his usual dominance has been restricted to a great extent by Florida. The Panthers have played a physical brand of hockey and have ensured a team effort on both offense and defense, taking the time and space away from Edmonton’s players.

If the Oilers want to avoid the same fate as last year, they will have to step up and bring their A-game, and that includes their star player, who will need to contribute more in the final games of the series.

nfl nfl

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
