Top-seeded Gauff faces a familiar test in Kudermetova as the Montreal field begins to tighten.
Top seed Coco Gauff is set to face unseeded Veronika Kudermetova in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal. Gauff, who received a first-round bye, opened her campaign with a hard-fought three-set win over Danielle Collins, clinching the match in a tense final-set tiebreak. Kudermetova, meanwhile, came through a tricky draw, first edging Cristian Bucsa in three sets, then upsetting 29th seed Olga Danilovic in straight sets.
World No. 2 Gauff has bounced back from a mid-season slump with a strong clay swing. After reaching the quarterfinals in Stuttgart and Melbourne, she made three consecutive finals in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros. That said, withdrawals from Berlin and Wimbledon highlight lingering inconsistencies. Through 41 matches this season, Gauff has hit 116 aces, won 70.1% of first-serve points, 49.2% of return points, and converted 54.2% of break points.

Primarily known for her doubles success, Kudermetova recently lifted the Wimbledon doubles crown with Elise Mertens. In singles, she’s had a patchy year, with her best results being a fourth-round finish at the Australian Open, quarterfinals in Hobart and Libema, and several early exits in between. Across 34 matches, she’s served 137 aces, won 65.4% of first-serve points, 43.6% on return, and converted 41.5% of break points.

Coco Gauff leads her head-to-head against Veronika Kudermetova 2-1. All three of their meetings came in 2023, beginning in Doha, where Kudermetova edged out a three-set win in the quarterfinals. Gauff responded later in Stuttgart, battling through a three-setter to level the rivalry, and then the American pulled ahead in Beijing, with a straight-sets win.

Gauff’s form on clay and her win over Aryna Sabalenka at Roland Garros make her the clear favorite, though Kudermetova’s recent doubles triumph shows she’s carrying a mental edge into Montreal.
