Gauff eyes another deep run as Siegemund seeks a surprise breakthrough
Third seed Coco Gauff will face unseeded Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open 2025. As one of the top eight seeds, Gauff received a first-round bye and has been efficient so far, defeating qualifier Moyuka Uchijima and wild card Shuai Zhang without much trouble. Siegemund began her campaign against Dayana Yastremska, who retired in the third set due to heat and humidity, before upsetting fifth seed Mirra Andreeva and overcoming Magdalena Frech to reach the last eight.

Gauff arrives in Wuhan after a semifinal run in Beijing, where she fell to eventual champion Amanda Anisimova. The American’s season highlight remains her Roland Garros triumph, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka to claim her second Grand Slam title. She also made back-to-back finals on clay in Madrid and Rome, showing her growing consistency on slower surfaces. However, early exits, including a fourth-round loss at the US Open, have interrupted her rhythm. In 56 matches this year, Gauff has struck 165 aces, winning 68.6% of first-serve points and converting 53.9% of break points.

Siegemund, a two-time singles champion and 16-time doubles titleholder, continues to balance both disciplines. Her standout singles result this year came at Wimbledon, where she reached a career-best quarterfinal before falling to Sabalenka. Beyond that, her results have been limited, including a retirement in Rome and an early exit in Beijing. In 26 matches this season, she has hit 25 aces, winning 60.5% of first-serve points and converting 38.8% of break points.
Coco Gauff and Laura Siegemund are level at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Their first meeting came at the 2020 Auckland Open, where Siegemund rallied to win in three sets. Gauff returned the favor at the 2023 US Open, producing her own comeback victory.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | US Open | Round of 128 | Coco Gauff | 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 |
| 2020 | Auckland | Round of 16 | Laura Siegemund | 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 |
| Coco Gauff | Category | Laura Siegemund |
| 3 | Current Ranking | 57 |
| 271-113 | Career W-L | 604-411 |
| 42-14 | YTD W-L | 20-21 |
| 10 | Career Titles | 2 |
| 2 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Coco Gauff’s steady form and ability to handle pressure make her the clear favorite to advance. Siegemund’s variety and defensive craft could trouble her in patches, but Gauff’s athleticism and baseline control should be enough to seal a straight-sets win.
Coco Gauff easily beats Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-2 to reach the QFs in Wuhan.
