Gauff looks to extend resurgence as Pegula seeks to reclaim control in WTA Finals
World No. 3 Coco Gauff is set to face world No. 5 Jessica Pegula in the WTA Finals 2025. Gauff’s season highlight came at Roland Garros, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka to capture her second Grand Slam title. The American has since added another trophy in Wuhan, also defeating Pegula in straight sets and reached the finals in Madrid and Rome, falling to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini.
She’s also posted a semifinal run in Beijing and quarterfinal finishes in Melbourne, Stuttgart, and Cincinnati. Having a few early exits earlier in the season, Gauff’s all-court game and athleticism have kept her among the elite, with 178 aces, a 68.5% first-serve win rate, and a sharp 54.9% break-point conversion across 62 matches.

Pegula, meanwhile, has quietly pieced together another strong campaign marked by power and volume. The 31-year-old reached six finals and claimed titles in Austin, Charleston, and Bad Homburg, while finishing runner-up to Madison Keys in Adelaide, Sabalenka in Miami, and Gauff in Wuhan. She also made back-to-back semifinals in the US Open and Wuhan, with quarterfinals in Doha. Still, inconsistency has crept in, most notably with a fourth-round Roland Garros loss to wildcard Lois Boisson. In 70 matches, Pegula has tallied 182 aces, winning 67.6% of first-serve points and converting 45.5% of break opportunities.

Jessica Pegula holds a narrow 4-3 lead in her head-to-head against Coco Gauff. Their rivalry began in 2022 in Dubai, where Pegula claimed a straight-sets win before Gauff responded a year later in Eastbourne. Pegula then surged ahead, winning three straight meetings to take control of the matchup. However, Gauff has turned the tide recently, defeating her at the 2024 WTA Finals and again in Wuhan earlier this season.

Gauff’s recent wins and improved aggression give her the edge, though Pegula’s tactical depth keeps her dangerous. Expect Gauff’s momentum to carry her through.
Coco Gauff has won her first 9 hard court finals.

She is the first woman to achieve this in the Open Era.
She is also the first woman to win 9 consecutive hard court finals since Serena Williams in 2015.
Unreal stuff.
