Gauff and Anisimova collide in high-stakes China Open semifinal clash
Second seed Coco Gauff is set to face third seed Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals of the China Open 2025. Both players received byes in the opening round. Gauff began her campaign with a straight-sets win over Kamilla Rakhimova, followed by tough three-set victories against 25th seed Leylah Fernandez and 15th seed Belinda Bencic.
In the quarterfinals, she was back to her commanding best, dismissing Eva Lys in straight sets. Anisimova, meanwhile, opened with wins over Katie Boulter and wild card Shuai Zhang in straight sets before grinding through three-set battles against 13th seed Karolina Muchova and sixth seed Jasmine Paolini.
This season, Gauff’s crowning achievement came in Paris, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka to win her second Grand Slam at Roland Garros. She also made back-to-back finals in Madrid and Rome, underlining her poise on big stages. Yet her run ended early at the US Open with a disappointing fourth-round loss. But, besides the few mentioned here, she also had several early round exits so far. Statistically, Gauff has served 148 aces across 51 matches, winning 69.1 percent of first-serve points, 48.8 percent on return, and converting 55 percent of break points.

Anisimova, on the other hand, has continued her inspiring rise since returning from a mental health break in 2023. The 23-year-old now sits at a career-high No. 4 and has contested two major finals this season, at Wimbledon and the US Open, falling to Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka. Her year also includes a finals run in London, semifinals in Charleston, and a title in Doha. In 52 matches, she has tallied 183 aces, winning 65.5 percent of first-serve points, 45.4 percent on return, and converting 44.4 percent of break chances.
Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova are tied 1-1 in their head-to-head. Gauff claimed their first meeting in Parma in 2021 with a straight-sets win, but Anisimova leveled the rivalry the following year at Wimbledon, earning a straight-sets victory of her own that included a tiebreak.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | Wimbledon | Round of 32 | Amanda Anisimova | 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1 |
| 2021 | Parma | Quarterfinals | Coco Gauff | 6-3, 6-3 |
| Coco Gauff | Category | Amanda Anisimova |
| 3 | Current Ranking | 4 |
| 267-112 | Career W-L | 200-114 |
| 38-13 | YTD W-L | 39-16 |
| 10 | Career Titles | 3 |
| 2 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 1 |
Anisimova’s resurgence and big-match experience give her a strong chance, but Gauff’s athleticism and Roland Garros confidence may tilt this semifinal in her favor. Even on paper, both players are young and extraordinary. Though one of them has two Grand Slams, even Anisimova reached two finals, which is not an easy task. Thus, the match can go any way, but Gauff may have some edge.
