Carolina Hurricanes hint at potential trades to strengthen their roster ahead of the season’s critical stretch.
According to TSN’s Chris Johnston on Insider Trading, fresh off their blockbuster trade to acquire Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche, the Carolina Hurricanes may not be done dealing. Along with Rantanen, the Hurricanes also landed winger Taylor Hall in the deal, significantly enhancing their forward depth.
However, the trade created a gap at the center position, as Jack Drury was sent to Colorado as part of the package. While Drury’s inclusion may not have grabbed headlines, he was a reliable bottom-six center for the Hurricanes over the past few seasons. His departure leaves a noticeable void that Carolina might look to address in the coming weeks.

Interestingly, Johnston doesn’t expect the Hurricanes to pursue an upgrade in goal, a position they actively explored earlier in the season. For now, the team seems content with the tandem of Pyotr Kochetkov and Frederik Andersen. While neither is considered elite, both are dependable NHL goaltenders capable of holding the fort.

Carolina’s biggest challenge in making additional moves will be navigating their limited cap space. With less than $500K available (per Puck Pedia), any trade would require the Hurricanes to send out a matching salary. While this constraint could complicate things, the Hurricanes have shown they’re willing to get creative to find players who meet their needs.
Stay tuned as Carolina might still have a few tricks up their sleeve as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches.
