Alcaraz carries heavy favoritism into Turin battle with surging Musetti
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz awaits ninth seed Lorenzo Musetti at the 2025 ATP Finals, fresh off a straight set opening win over Alex de Minaur. The Spaniard had one of the most dominant seasons of his career, collecting eight titles across Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, Rome, Roland Garros, London, Cincinnati, the US Open, and most recently Tokyo.
Alcaraz briefly reclaimed the world No. 1 spot after New York, but a second-round loss to Cameron Norrie in Paris. The latter, combined with Jannik Sinner’s title run, pushed him back to No. 2. Beyond early stumbles in Miami and an injury-forced withdrawal in Madrid, Alcaraz has been rock-steady. His numbers underline the dominance with 437 aces, 74% first-serve points won, 35% return points won, and a 44% conversion rate on 693 break points.
World #1 (tomorrow) Carlos Alcaraz plays a good first match in Turin and defeats #7 Alex De Minuar 7-6(5), 6-2 to start his ATP Finals campaign.

Musetti, meanwhile, enters Turin unexpectedly after Novak Djokovic withdrew with a shoulder injury. The Italian arrives on the back of a runner-up finish in Athens and a season that saw him peak at No. 6 before settling at No. 9. While he hasn’t won a title this year, his consistency has been elite, with finals in Monte Carlo and Chengdu, semifinals at Roland Garros, Madrid, and Rome, and a US Open quarterfinal.
His year also carried setbacks, including retirements in Argentina and Roland Garros and withdrawals from Rio and Barcelona due to calf and thigh issues. Statistically, he’s posted 261 aces, won 72% of first-serve points, 31% of return points, and converted 40% of 487 break points.

Carlos Alcaraz holds a commanding 6-1 lead over Lorenzo Musetti in their head-to-head. Their first meeting came in Hamburg in 2022, where Musetti stunned Alcaraz with a straight-sets win. But that early spark never turned into a balanced rivalry. Since then, Alcaraz has taken complete control, winning the next six encounters. This season alone, he defeated Musetti in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Roland Garros, highlighting the gap in firepower. However, their Roland Garros clash ended prematurely when Musetti was forced to retire with a left-thigh injury, handing Alcaraz a walkover.

Musetti’s artistry, improved consistency, and unexpected Turin qualification make him a dangerous spoiler, especially indoors, where he thrives on timing. But Alcaraz’s season-long momentum and mental and clear matchup advantage give him the edge.
🇪🇸 Carlos Alcaraz says he would rather be in the same group as Musetti than Djokovic:

“I'm not going to lie, I prefer Lorenzo over Djokovic in my group.
“It is always difficult to face Novak here because of the experience he has and his level on these courts.

With eight titles, elite return numbers, and a 6-1 head-to-head edge, Alcaraz enters as the overwhelming statistical favorite. His superior physicality and baseline dominance should give him full control of the rallies. On paper, this projects as a straight-sets win for the Spaniard.
