Canelo Alvarez and William Scull are set to square off on Saturday, May 3, in Saudi Arabia, headlining a blockbuster event for the undisputed super middleweight championship. Will Alvarez suffer just the third loss of his career, or will Scull taste defeat for the first time? That’s the question gripping boxing fans on both sides.
The Mexican star enters as the reigning WBC, WBO, WBA, and Ring Magazine super middleweight champion, having a record of 62-2-2 with a 62.9% knockout rate. Alvarez was previously the undisputed champion at 168 pounds, but the IBF stripped him of the title after he opted to face Edgar Berlanga in September 2024 instead of having his mandatory fight against Scull.
Though Alvarez won that bout and retained his remaining titles, the IBF vacated the belt per its regulations. Scull, however, didn’t inherit the title by default; he earned it with a unanimous decision win over Vladimir Shishkin in October 2024. The Cuban remains unbeaten at 23-0, with a 39.1% knockout rate.
The five-fight Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull card is scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m. ET (3:45 p.m. PT and 8:45 a.m. AEST). The main event between Álvarez and Scull is expected to start around 11:15 p.m. ET (8:15 p.m. PT and 1:15 p.m. AEST), though exact timing may vary depending on the duration of the undercard bouts.
