Cinco de Mayo Weekend Boxing Fest 2025: Is This the Greatest Boxing Card of the Year?

The annual celebration Cinco De Mayo to be held on May 5th, 2025 is almost upon us! It is primarily celebrated to remember Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire in 1862. The celebration involves food, parades, music, folklore dancing, and many more events. However, the weekend will also be important for Boxing as we have some of the biggest stars competing on the Cinco De Mayo weekend.

We’re talking about Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, Canelo Alvarez, and Naoya Inoue, all fighting over the weekend at various places, across New York, Riyadh, and Las Vegas.

So today we’ll talk about all the fights that will happen through out the Cinco De Mayo weekend. Let’s get right into it.

To start off the weekend we’ll saw Ryan Garcia will take on Rolly Romero. The night also featured Devin Haney vs Jose Ramirez, and Teofimo Lopez vs Arnold Barboza Jr. All of these bouts took place at Times Square, New York, on May 2nd, 2025.

New York

In May 2, 2025, we saw Ryan Garcia take on Rolly Romero, and after fighting all the rounds, Romero pulled off an upset, as he won the bout via unanimous decision. Romero managed to knockdown Garcia in the second round of the fight with a double left hook, and that was when the momentum changed. While Garcia tried to recover in the later rounds, Romero never looked back, and absolutely dominated the fight.

We also saw Devin Haney take on Jose Ramirez. The fight, as stated by many fans, was not up to the mark, as both the fighters barely threw any punches. Haney managed to defeat Ramirez via unanimous decision, but the winner looked heavily uninspired. Haney landed a total of just 70 punches, and his opponent Ramirez did even worse as he connected on just 17 punches. This had the fans upset, and the bout looked more like a sparring session than an actual fight between two professionals.

Teofimo Lopez fought Arnold Barboza, and this bout did not disappoint. The two had a lot of bad blood and confrontations going into the fight, and Lopez had even slapped Barboza earlier in the press conference on March. Lopez managed to retain his belt by defeating the unbeaten Barboza via unanimous decision, and while many questioned the champ’s consistency going into the fight, Lopez showed that he was the far superior boxer between the two, as he dominated the bout and put all of those critics to rest.

Riyadh

On May 3rd, 2025, we saw Canelo Alvarez take on William Scull for the epic fight. Alvarez took home the crown yet again and has met up most of the expectations that many have had of him so far. Alvarez went on to secure his sixth unanimous decision victory, and was crowned the Super-Middleweight Champion once again. However, fans do wonder how long Alvarez can continue to box, as it was evident that his reflexes and explosiveness isn’t nearly at the same level it once was.

Las Vegas

To finish off the weekend, we’ll see Naoya Inoue vs Ramon Cardenas which will take place at Las Vegas, Nevada on May 4th, 2025.

Who Is Favored To Win in These Bouts?

Here are the odds for all the fights that are to take place in the Cinco De Mayo weekend;

Naoya Inoue (-8000) vs Ramon Cardenas (+1600)

*Editor’s Note- This article has been updated for the bouts that took place on May 2nd, 2025 and May 3rd, 2025. Romero defeated the -900 favorite Ryan Garcia and won the bout via unanimous decision. Whereas Devin Haney, who was -1250 favorite to win the fight, defeated the underdog Jose Ramirez via unanimous decision. Teofimo Lopez, who was the least -250 favorite amongst the other fighters to win his fight against Arnold Barboza Jr., also won the fight and managed to retain his title via unanimous decision. We also saw Canelo Alvarez, the overwhelming -3000 favorite, defeat William Scull via unanimous decision, at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
