Potential absence of Brock Purdy casts shadow over 49ers' season finale
49ers’ quarterback, Brock Purdy missed a part of Thursday practice, shadowing his potential presence for Sunday’s game against the Packers.
Last Sunday, Brock Purdy took a hard hit on his shoulder against the Seahawks but didn’t really seem bothered. He completed 75% of his passes, but didn’t attempt any beyond 20 yards, maybe a sign of some disconfort.
Purdy was listed as limited in Wednesday and Thursday practice, not enough to alarm his teammates like Christian McCaffrey nor his head coach Kyle Shanahan.
“In terms of his throws, I didn’t see anything that looked any different and he didn’t complain about that in any way to me,” Shanahan said Thursday on a radio interview on KNBR.
But still, his status for Sunday’s game is in jeopardy.
Last year, Brandon Allen served as 3rd string quarterback behind Purdy and Sam Darnold. This year, he would probably suit up if Purdy is kept out of the game.
His familiarity with the game plan has allowed him to win the backup role upon Joshua Dobbs. This season, Allen has seen the field just once for a QB knee in Week 1 game against the Jets.
Overall, Brandon Allen has a 2-7 record in games he started with the Broncos and the Bengals.

But beyond the simple absence of Brock Purdy, several other players have been limited in training. McCaffrey (Achilles, rest) and George Kittle (hamstring) were limited Thursday’ while Nick Bosa (hip/oblique) and Trent Williams (ankle) were out for the entire training.
With all those potential outs, the 49ers might be in big trouble considering the rest of the season.
With two huge games upcoming against the Packers (this Sunday) and the Bills in Week 13, 49ers’ playoffs aspiration could fly away.
Still, the 49ers have the best lineup in the NFC West but every week they seem depleted by injuries. Christian McCaffrey’s return is huge development for the team but his explosiveness still hasn’t shown up.
If the Cardinals continue to roll like they are and beat the Seahawks on Sunday, it would become really complicated for Kyle Shanahan’s team to envision a division title. After Week 13, 49ers could realistically stand with a 5-7 record.
Being without their starting quarterback could be a huge blow and all of a sudden, the 49ers might be out of range for a playoffs spot in the NFC.
