Brentford Sign Former Liverpool Skipper Jordan Henderson on Two-Year Deal

Abhinav Goel

Since leaving Liverpool, Henderson’s career has taken an unexpected path, from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands, and now back to the Premier League.

Brentford have completed the signing of former Liverpool captain and England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract, following his departure from Ajax. Last week, Ajax confirmed they had agreed to terminate Henderson’s contract a year early after a season where they narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie title.

As a result, Henderson became a free agent this summer, attracting interest from clubs in England and across Europe. Brentford have now swooped in to secure his services, offering him a two-year deal to bring leadership and experience to manager Keith Andrews’s squad.

The 35-year-old veteran spent over a decade at Anfield and enjoyed an illustrious spell with Liverpool. He lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Community Shield, Super Cup and Club World Cup during his 12-year stay.

It Was a Pretty Simple Decision: Keith Andrews

New Brentford boss Keith Andrews moved swiftly to sign Jordan Henderson following the departure of Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal. Andrews highlighted the importance of bringing in leadership and experience after recent exits, including Norgaard, goalkeeper Mark Flekken and defender Ben Mee.

Andrews said,

“When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision. He’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club. He will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad.”

In July 2023, Henderson made headlines with a high-profile move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, managed by his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard. However, his stint in Saudi Arabia proved short-lived, with Henderson leaving the club after just six months. He then joined Ajax, where he captained the Dutch giants and made over 50 appearances.

Since leaving Liverpool, Henderson’s career has taken an unexpected path, from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands, and now back to the Premier League. Earlier this year, Henderson was handed an England recall by new manager Thomas Tuchel in March, having not played for the Three Lions since November 2023. He currently holds 84 England caps and has featured at three World Cups and three European Championships.
