UFC 322 Shake-Up – Bo Nickal Loses Main Card Spot As Promotion Elevates Another Bout!

Zaid Quraishi

Bo Nickal’s UFC journey has been nothing short of fascinating to watch. The three-time NCAA wrestling champion came into the promotion with massive hype and expectations. Everyone expected him to dominate his way to a title shot quickly. Instead, reality hit hard when Reinier de Ridder handed him his first career loss back in May. That defeat changed everything for Nickal’s trajectory in the UFC.

He was supposed to bounce back on the main card at UFC 322 in Madison Square Garden on November 15, facing BJJ champion Rodolfo Vieira. All five of his previous UFC appearances have been on main cards, including huge events like UFC 300 and last year’s MSG card at UFC 309. But in a surprising UFC 322 shake-up, Bo Nickal loses main card spot as the promotion decided to demote him to the prelims.

The news came during Saturday’s UFC Vegas 110 broadcast when the promotion rolled out a new bout order for UFC 322. Nickal vs Vieira has been moved from the main card to the featured prelim spot. In their place, the UFC elevated a lightweight contender bout between Beneil Dariush and Benoit Saint-Denis to the PPV portion. It’s a stunning demotion for someone who was once considered one of the sport’s brightest prospects.

Why The UFC Made This Change Now?

The decision to demote Bo Nickal (7-1) makes sense from a matchmaking perspective, even if it stings for his fans. UFC 322 is stacked with two title fights headlining the card. Islam Makhachev challenges Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight championship, and Valentina Shevchenko defends her flyweight title against Zhang Weili. Both champions moving between weight classes adds extra intrigue to those bouts. The main card also features Leon Edwards vs Carlos Prates and Sean Brady against Michael Morales in welterweight action. Adding Dariush vs Saint-Denis gives fans another high-stakes lightweight bout between ranked contenders.

Meanwhile, Bo Nickal is coming off his first loss and facing an opponent in Vieira who doesn’t carry much name recognition with casual fans. Vieira is an accomplished grappler with a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but he’s not a draw. The matchup makes sense competitively as a test of Nickal’s ground game, but it doesn’t scream must-see PPV to the fans.

The UFC clearly felt that Dariush and Saint-Denis would deliver more excitement and stakes for the main card. Both guys are proven finishers with fan-friendly styles who sit in the lightweight top 15. It’s hard to argue with that logic, even if Nickal’s supporters are disappointed.
