Shelton’s Power Meets Cobolli’s Upset Energy in a Clash of Momentum in Toronto.
Fourth seed Ben Shelton will square off against 13th seed Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round of the National Bank Open in Toronto. Both received first-round byes and have been making plenty of noise this season. In Toronto, Cobolli edged out wild cards Alexis Galarneau and Fabian Marozsan in gritty three-setters. Shelton, meanwhile, breezed past qualifier Adrian Mannarino before surviving a thriller against 25th seed Brandon Nakashima, winning in a comeback with tiebreaks in both the first and third sets.

Shelton is riding the wave of a career-best season and is currently ranked No. 7 in the world. While still chasing his first title this year, he’s made deep runs, including finals in Munich (lost to Zverev) and semifinals in Melbourne, Stuttgart, and Washington. The lefty also reached quarterfinals in Indian Wells and Wimbledon. Statistically, he’s been a weapon with 393 aces, 75% first-serve points won, 26% first-serve return points won, and a sharp 43% break point conversion on 215 opportunities.
Cobolli has had more up-and-down results but owns two titles this season, Bucharest and Hamburg, where he stunned Sebastian Baez and Andrey Rublev in straight sets. He’s also posted quarterfinals in Halle, Wimbledon, and on the Challenger circuit. The Italian’s numbers back him up with 169 aces, 68% first-serve points won, 32% return points won on first serve, and a 38% break point conversion rate.
