The Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has been fired, effective immediately.
For the first time in the history of the Chicago Bears franchise, there has been an in-season head coaching change. The Chicago Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus has been fired, effective immediately. The Bears are well-known for not firing any head coach in an ongoing season but Matt Eberflus has become the first.
From his own team players to experts and analysts, no one seemed to be happy about how things unfolded in the Bears vs. Lions Thanksgiving game yesterday. Poor decision making regarding clock management and not taking the timeout when he had one at his disposal, Matt Eberflus was the talk of the town for the past 24 hours or so.
Matt Eberflus, 54, posted a 14-32 record in the 3 seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Eberflus’ tenure with the Bears has been tough, to say the least.
3-14 in the 2022 season which was his first as the Bears’ HC, 7-10 in 2023 and 4-8 before getting fired this season; Eberflus had an overall win percentage of .304 as the Bears’ HC.
While Eberflus defended the thanksgiving timeout fiasco against the Lions by saying, ‘I think we handled it the right way’, the decision did not sit well with the players.
Wideout Keenan Allen who scored 2 receiving touchdowns in the Bears vs. Lions’ game did not mince his words. Allen said, “I feel like we did enough as players to win the game.” Bears’ wide receiver DJ Moore who was also responsible for the team’s late resurgence last night also said that he was confused as to why they didn’t call a timeout when that was the obvious decision to make.
The rookie QB Caleb Williams was not the one to be blamed for Eberflus’ blunder. Trailing 16-0 at halftime, Williams and Keenan Allen led the Bears to a spectacular comeback that almost took Dan Campbell and the Lions out. That is until Eberflus made the final call.
Eberflus getting fired opened ways for Bears’ offensive coordinator Thomas Brown to be named as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Thomas Brown has already won a Super Bowl (LVI) as the running backs coach of the Los Angeles Rams under head coach Sean McVay. He has also served as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in the 2023 season.
