Atletico Madrid have entered the race for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, delivering a significant setback to Liverpool’s transfer plans. Notably, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been increasingly looking towards defensive reinforcements in January. The Reds are under mounting pressure after a damaging 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool’s latest defeat, ninth in last twelve games, has intensified scrutiny on Slot’s future and highlighted vulnerabilities within their squad. With Liverpool facing a crucial Premier League test against West Ham United, the outcome could influence whether Slot remains in charge long enough to oversee the winter transfer window.
The Reds have been handed another blow as their top transfer target Marc Guehi has reportedly been approached by Atletico Madrid. According to Matteo Moretto on Radio Marca, Atletico Madrid have already made contact with Guehi’s camp. The Spanish giants have taken advantage of the fact that the England centre-back will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs in January.

Notably, Liverpool have long considered Guehi a potential solution to their defensive inconsistency, especially as Ibrahima Konate continues to struggle with form and costly errors. A move for the Palace defender could offer the stability and leadership that the Reds currently lack. However, Atletico’s early approach may now complicate that pursuit.

Meanwhile, concerns around Guehi’s fitness appear to have eased. The 24-year-old returned from international duty early due to a foot issue. He was recently substituted at half-time during Crystal Palace’s Conference League fixture against Strasbourg, raising fears of a setback. However, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner clarified that the change was precautionary rather than forced. Glasner revealed that the substitution was pre-planned due to Guehi’s limited training time in recent weeks. Notably, the England centre-back is expected to be fully available for selection against Manchester United.
