Real Madrid Pull Out of Race to Sign Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool

Moumita Dutta

Real Madrid have removed themselves from one of the transfer sagas that was expected to shape the 2026 market. They’ve stepped back from a pursuit many had assumed was inevitable. Ibrahima Konate was long being viewed as a natural fit for the Spanish giants.

He is approaching the final stretch of his Liverpool contract. It has prompted months of speculation about a future move abroad. But despite that mounting expectation, Madrid have informed Liverpool in clear terms that they will not be entering the race. It has left the defender’s next step suddenly far less predictable.

Why Real Madrid Stepped Away

Konate’s form this season has fueled some of the uncertainty surrounding his future. He was once a symbol of defensive authority during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign. However, he has since endured a turbulent return. It’s been affected both by individual errors and the team’s overall struggles.

Performances in recent heavy defeats intensified scrutiny and that probably provided context for Madrid’s decision. Transfer insiders David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano both reported that Madrid communicated “directly and unequivocally” that they are not pursuing the French centre-back.

That blunt message cut through the growing swirl of rumours. It also removed one of the strongest potential destinations for Konate. The situation has been compounded by his own public response to criticism after a difficult Champions League performance. Following that, he took to social media to respond.

He wrote on Instagram: “Criticism is part of football, and we’ll fight back every time and come through this storm… Your voice and your support mean everything to us.” It was a rare moment of openness from a player who usually stays out of the spotlight.

What Lies Ahead for Ibrahima Konate

With Madrid gone, other clubs are now circling. Bayern Munich have emerged as a serious contender. They’re exploring centre-back options due to uncertainty around Dayot Upamecano’s contract. Reports suggest that Bayern have already made informal contact with Konate’s camp.

Paris Saint-Germain are another possible destination. They’re offering the appeal of a return to his home city and a long-term succession plan behind captain Marquinhos. Konate’s familiarity with the Bundesliga and his French roots make both options viable should he choose a new environment.

Liverpool, however, have not closed the door on extending his contract. The defender has already played 150 matches for the club and remains highly valued internally despite recent struggles. With the team undergoing a transition under Arne Slot, Konate could yet be part of the club’s rebuild if both sides reach an agreement before his contract expires.
