World No. 1 begins WTA Finals 2025 with authority, chasing elusive first crown
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka opened her 2025 WTA Finals campaign in emphatic fashion, storming past Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-1 in just 70 minutes to seize early control of the Stefanie Graf Group. Playing in her milestone 500th career match, Sabalenka delivered a statement performance in Riyadh, reaffirming why she remains the most dominant indoor player in the field with 40 career indoor wins at the WTA level, the highest among this year’s finalists.
Already assured of finishing 2025 as the year-end No. 1 before even stepping on court, Sabalenka entered this edition of the Finals with one clear goal. To finally capture the one major title missing from her resume, among others. The victory also lifted her overall WTA Finals record to 9-8, a mark that now reflects her growing consistency on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Sabalenka said about the match, “We’ve played a lot, and every time it’s a tough battle. It doesn’t matter what the score is. I know I always have to stay focused, and if you give her an opportunity, she’s going to step in and take control. So, I think I’m most happy with my focus today.”

Sunday’s triumph marked Sabalenka’s 12th Top 10 win of the season and her 60th victory overall, the first time she’s hit that milestone in a single year. Alongside Iga Swiatek (62 wins), she forms the first WTA duo to record 60 or more wins in a season since Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska in 2013.
Her 2025 campaign has been one for the history books with a US Open title, finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, semifinals at Wimbledon, and WTA 1000 crowns in Miami and Madrid, plus a WTA 500 title in Brisbane. In recognition of her dominance, Sabalenka has also become just the seventh player in WTA history to hold the No. 1 ranking for an entire calendar year, joining legends like Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Serena Williams, and Ashleigh Barty.
