Arsenal Closer Than Ever to Sign Viktor Gyokeres After Final Transfer Breakthrough

The Swedish Striker Set for Singapore Medical As Gunners Near €73.5M Sporting Deal.

Arsenal are edging closer than ever to securing the signing of Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP. After weeks of negotiations, the Gunners have reportedly reached a full agreement with Sporting over a deal worth €63.5 million (£55m) upfront. They will also get an additional €10m (£8.6m) in performance-related add-ons.

According to BBC Sport, Arsenal initially hoped to finalize the transfer before departing for their pre-season tour of Asia. However, talks over the structure of add-on payments delayed progress. Sporting president Frederico Varandas had pushed for bonuses that would be easily achievable.

Most of them were tied to Gyokeres’ first two seasons in North London. A compromise has now been struck. The company will spread the bonus payments over a longer timeline and  them to both individual and team milestones. This would include title wins and Champions League qualification.

The Swedish striker has already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with Arsenal. It will keep him at the Emirates until 2030. Gyokeres, 27, had interest from other top clubs, including Manchester United. However, he made clear throughout the summer that his priority was joining Mikel Arteta’s side.

Viktor Gyokeres, A Ruthless Finisher to Boost Arsenal Attack

Gyokeres arrives with an outstanding scoring record. He netted 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting last season. His lethal finishing, combined with intelligent movement and work rate, make him an ideal fit for Arteta’s system. Data from Opta shows he created 2.15 chances per 90 minutes last season.

That averaged 1.42 goal contributions per game. This number certainly tells the story of how big of an all-round attacking threat Gyokeres is. Gunners won’t have to wait long to see their new signing.

According to The Independent, plans are in place to fly Gyokeres to Singapore for his medical and integration with the squad. He is unlikely to feature against AC Milan on Wednesday. However, he might make his debut against Newcastle in Sunday’s friendly.

Arteta, speaking about his transfer plans, said, “We are short and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad. We are constantly looking in the market.” With Gyokeres and centre-back Cristhian Mosquera set to join, Arsenal look to be set in this transfer window.
