Ariel Helwani suggests a perfect co-main event for the upcoming UFC Noche 2025 event!
UFC hosts tens of events every year. And for the special card, they need more than just great fights to become memorable. They need storylines, tension, and real emotion between competitors. The promotion has always understood this secret ingredient. Dana White and the UFC matchmakers have built their empire on finding the perfect timing for grudge matches. These fights tap into something primal that fans can’t resist. Nothing sells tickets quite like genuine bad blood between two fighters who truly can’t stand each other.
Mexican fight fans have always brought incredible passion to combat sports. Their rich boxing history has carried over to the UFC. Stars like Brandon Moreno, Alexa Grasso and Yair Rodriguez have built loyal followings. The annual UFC Noche event celebrates this connection with the Mexican market. It typically features the promotion’s top Mexican and Latin American talents on Mexican Independence Day weekend. And now, fans are wondering who would feature on this card.
MMA journalist Ariel Helwani has never been shy about playing fantasy matchmaker. On his show The Ariel Helwani Show this week, Helwani proposed what many fans are now calling the perfect solution.
“That fight [Yair vs. Lopes] makes even more sense now. It’s perfect. Maybe co-main event for that PPV [UFC Noche]. That fight would be the perfect co-main event in my opinion.
Helwani’s suggestion makes perfect sense from every angle. The timing works well for both fighters’ careers. Rodriguez needs to rebuild after his recent losses and recent one win, while Lopes is looking to get back in the win column after his loss to Alexander Volkanovski. Moreover, their is genuine bad blood between them and the UFC Noche is the perfect timeline for this beef to be settled! The storyline practically writes itself!
But why do they not like each other? Let us explore the UFC 314 press conference chaos.
The rivalry between Yair Rodriguez and Diego Lopes erupted at the UFC 314 press conference last week. Security had to physically separate the two featherweights before things got ugly. When a reporter asked about a potential fight, Lopes reminded everyone about Rodriguez’s recent losing streak.
“How many losses does he have in a row? Two? That’s not enough?”
Rodriguez fired back with a single word in Spanish: “Culon.” This is a highly offensive Mexican insult. This triggered Lopes, who demanded Rodriguez say it to his face. The situation quickly spiraled as ‘El Pantera’ brought up old drama about ‘Lopes’ team jumping Rodrigues’ teammate, namely Marcos. This kept on going in the background even after the presser was over. This is the reason for the beef between the two. Although fans may not understand this fully, but the bad blood is real!
As fight fans, we can imagine the buildup to them actually facing off! If the UFC matchmakers follow Helwani’s advice, fight fans could be in for something special when September 2025 rolls around. The question isn’t whether this fight makes sense. It is whether the octagon can contain all that animosity when these featherweight rivals finally meet!
