Anaheim Ducks expected to send defense prospect Stian Solberg to the AHL, providing him with crucial development time at the pro level.
The Anaheim Ducks are set to bring their 2024 first-round pick, Stian Solberg, to North America for the remainder of the season. His Swedish Hockey League team, Farjestad BK, confirmed the move, allowing the 19-year-old Norwegian defenseman to join the Ducks’ AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls.
Solberg signed his entry-level contract shortly after the draft, making him eligible to transition stateside without Farjestad’s approval. The 6’2”, 205-pound blueliner has spent the season in Sweden, where he tallied 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in 47 games. Known for his physicality and defensive reliability, he has developed well against tougher competition compared to his previous stint in Norway’s top league.

Anaheim originally loaned Solberg to Färjestad to continue his development in a familiar environment. However, with injuries depleting San Diego’s defensive core, the Ducks have opted to bring him over earlier than expected. This move is uncommon while a European club is still in contention, as Färjestad is gearing up for its playoff run.

Solberg, who impressed scouts with his strong World Championship performance last year, will now get his first taste of North American pro hockey. With his size and defensive mindset, he has an outside shot at making Anaheim’s NHL roster next season. His time in San Diego will be crucial in determining the next steps in his development.
