Beijing braces for Anisimova’s firepower against Paolini’s fearless form

Third seed Amanda Anisimova will meet sixth seed Jasmine Paolini in the China Open 2025 quarterfinals. Both received first-round byes, with Anisimova cruising past Katie Boulter and wild card Shuai Zhang in straight sets before staging a comeback win over 13th seed Karolina Muchova. Paolini has yet to drop a set, defeating Anastasija Sevastova, 27th seed Sofia Kenin, and Marie Bouzkova in commanding fashion.

Anisimova, currently at a career-high world No. 4, has made a remarkable comeback since her mental health break in May 2023. She returned in 2024 and hit her stride in 2025, reaching finals at Wimbledon and the US Open before falling to Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. Her season highlights include a Doha title over Jelena Ostapenko, semifinals in Charleston, and a finals run in London. Across 52 matches, she’s hit 183 aces, winning 65.5% of first-serve points, with 45.4% return points and a 44.4% break-point conversion rate.

Paolini, ranked No. 8 in singles and No. 5 in doubles, has been a breakout force. Her season featured a breakthrough Rome title over Coco Gauff and a Cincinnati finals run. She has also reached semifinals in Miami, Stuttgart, and Bad Homburg, and captured doubles titles in Doha, Rome, and Roland Garros alongside Sara Errani. And most recently, she lifted the Billie Jean Cup, defeating Jessica Pegula. In 50 matches, Paolini has struck 66 aces, won 62.1% of first-serve points, and converted 48.3% of break points.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
