Season Recap 2024

Alpine’s 2024 season was no less than a movie. The team started off with an all-French lineup for the season. However, the compatriots Gasly and Ocon could not settle in together and clashed at various points throughout the season. Alpine was battling internal issues amongst the drivers for the majority of the season. The turnaround for the team came at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. They secured a double podium with Gasly securing third and Ocon securing a second-place finish. It was the first time Alpine was able to produce a double podium finish since 2013 when they were known as the Lotus Formula 1 team. Alpine ended the season 6th in the constructor standings. They could not improve their standings from last year but the podium finish was able to compensate for the chaos that struck them in 2024.

History

Alpine has a long-standing Formula 1 history competing for the first time in 1982 as Toleman. They were later renamed as Benetton and won the 1995 constructor’s championship. The 1994 and 1995 found a new champion of the sport in Michael Schumacher who led Benetton to a lot of early success. The team was purchased by Renault for the first time in 2000 and they were able to produce two more driver’s championships with Fernando Alonso. Alonso competed against Schumacher and won the 2005 and 2006 driver’s championships for Renault. The team competed under Lotus Formula 1 moniker for 2012 and 2015. Renault bought the team again in 2016 and until the 2020 season it competed as Renault Formula 1 team. In 2021, it was decided that the team would adopt the Alpine moniker for their Formula 1 team with Fernando Alonso joining the charge. They claimed their first victory as Alpine in 2021 at the Hungarian Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon behind the wheel.

Predictions for 2025

Alpine may have redeemed themselves in the final half of the 2024 Formula 1 season, but they need to be careful in 2025. The combination of an experienced driver and a talented rookie can work out very well. Gasly has enough talent to take Doohan under his mantle. Jack Doohan on the other hand should try to help his team build a faster car and adapt quickly. If given a chance, Alpine can at least become the fastest midfield team. They can expect a podium or two if they are able to execute a perfect weekend. Jack Doohan has seen a legacy created by his father. He should a similar one in Formula 1 for himself. Gasly, on the other hand, needs to produce an impactful performance if he wants to shut down critics (especially the ones at Red Bull).

Pierre Gasly was a part of the Red Bull junior programme and initially joined as a Toro Rosso driver. He was promoted to Red Bull in 2019 after Daniel Ricciardo left the team but his performance was not deemed competitive enough in front of Max Verstappen. Gasly was sacked mid-season and he was sent back to Toro Rosso later known as Alpha Tauri. Gasly secured his first podium in 2020 at Alpha Tauri. He was able to win the Italian Grand Prix with the team in 2020 redeeming himself after the driver fiasco he faced a year before. Gasly’s talents were discarded by Red Bull who kept him stuck in the junior team for a long time. Gasly was able to produce another podium in 2021. However, he decided to stick with Alpine for the 2023 season and will now lead the team in 2025. Gasly’s 2024 season was marred by clashes with his French teammate Esteban Ocon.

Jack Doohan

The Doohan name is familiar to many people who are avid viewers of motorsports. Jack Doohan is the son of MotoGP champion Mick Doohan. He is the second runner-up of the 2023 Formula 2 season. Doohan has been a part of Alpine academy since 2022. He was previously a junior driver for Red Bull. He served as a reserve driver for Alpine in 2023 and 2024. Doohan replaced Alpine’s Esteban Ocon at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix finishing in 15th place. Even though Jack Doohan has not won any of the lower Formula series, he will still have to establish himself if he wants to compete in a midfield team like Alpine with an experienced race winning teammate.
