Alphonso Davies’ ACL Injury Reignites Concerns Over Grueling Football Calendar

Mayur Dedwal

Bayern Munich Director and Harry Kane has called out the hectic calendar once again.

Bayern Munich fullback Alphonso Davies has sustained a torn ACL during the International Break. The Canadian is reportedly ruled out for the season and is expected to undergo surgery soon.

Davies who played high-intensity games at the CONCACAF Nations League has joined the long list of players sidelined due this season. The 24-year-old who was giving high hopes for Bayern Munich this season, will be watching the rest of the season from the bench.

A director from Bayern Munich expressed constant concern over players returning fit from international breaks. Moreover, their center-back Dayot Upamecano also returned after sustaining a knee injury. Talking about the injury situation of the duo and the problem International Break possesses, Max Eberl said:

“Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries – this time we’ve been hit particularly hard. The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery.”

“Don’t Think The Players Are Listened to” – Harry Kane on Packed Schedule

Davies joins the list of Rodri, Dani Carvajal, and Lisandro Martínez, who have also suffered ACL tears this season. With so much at stake in the club competitions, the intensified fixture calendar is showing its effect on the players.

England Captain Harry Kane was the latest of players to be vocal about gruelling soccer calendar. Suggesting that amid clubs demanding more revenue and these injuries, the players have very less options. Talking after their comfortable win for Latvia, Kane told The Sun:

“There’s nothing we can do about it. I don’t think the players are listened to that much if I’m honest.”

“We’re getting used to it but it’s another summer where you do not have a break.  There are arguments from the clubs — to generate more money.

“But there’s also a player welfare point where there’s only so much you can do without more injuries. It is a hard balance.”

In the list of players who saw this coming, Manchester City midfielder Rodri also warned about the rise in serious injuries due to the packed schedule. Before sustaining a ACL injury in September, the Spaniard addressed how players are not being cared for despite being the main characters of the sport.

When asked about how many games he might have to appear this season, the 28-year-old said:

“This year we can go to 70, maybe 80, in my humble opinion it is too much. Someone has to take care of themselves.”

“We are the main characters of this sport or business.”

“Not everything is money or marketing, it is also the quality of the show. When I am not tired I perform better and if the people want to see better football, we need to rest.”

Despite so many warnings and calls for help, the fixture calendar has just got lengthier over the years. With the extended formats and more than usual International Breaks, athletes are being neglected in terms of recovery periods.

With the list of matches only increasing, the athletes on the list of injuries being added doesn’t come as a surprise given the current situation.
