Third seed Alexander Zverev opens his Wimbledon 2025 campaign against France’s Arthur Rinderknech, looking to shake off his history at the All England Club, the only Slam where he’s yet to reach a final. The world No. 3 arrives with solid form after a semifinal run in Halle, and with his game clicking on grass, expectations are high.
Rinderknech, meanwhile, hasn’t had the smoothest lead-in, falling early at the Mallorca Championships and having had no ATP win yet. His best Wimbledon result so far remains a second-round appearance last year, and facing a red-hot Zverev in round one is no easy task. Still, it’s grass and surprises are never out of the question in this first-ever match-up.

It’s been a solid, if slightly uneven, season for Zverev. The world No. 3 picked up his 24th career title in Munich, beating Ben Shelton in straight sets, and opened the year strong with a final run at the Australian Open, falling to Jannik Sinner in three sets. He followed that with back-to-back quarterfinals in Argentina and Rio before a brief dip. Since then, it’s been steady with quarterfinals in Rome and Roland Garros and recent finals in Stuttgart and semis in Halle.
Zverev’s numbers support the consistency: 332 aces, 74% first-serve points won, a 32% return rate on first serves, and 43% break point conversion on 345 opportunities.

Rinderknech, meanwhile, has had a quiet season, with no main-draw appearances past the second round, except at Queen’s, where he reached the quarterfinals, falling to eventual champ Carlos Alcaraz. A week later, he exited in the second round at Mallorca, losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The Frenchman has logged 218 aces, with a strong 75% first-serve win rate, but limited impact on return with just 23% on first-serve returns and 29% break point conversion on 110 chances.

Zverev enters with form and firepower on his side. His season may have had minor dips, but the German has consistently gone deep at big events and boasts far superior return numbers. Rinderknech’s serve can hold up, but his struggles on return and lack of top-tier wins this year leave him vulnerable.

“I had pretty good prep. Played a final, played a semi, worked through those tournaments. I think people are forgetting I’m #3 in the world and #3 in the race…I feel like my form is coming back the last few weeks..I think I can play well here..”

I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
