Germany will favor their chances against Spain in the absence of Alcaraz.
Germany overcame an opening singles loss against Argentina to book their spot in the Davis Cup 2025 semifinal on Thursday. After World No. 3 Alexander Zverev led the fight back, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz secured a thrilling win to complete a 2-1 victory against the South American giants. Germany is set to face Spain in the last four.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry kicked off proceedings against Jan-Lennard Struff in the first singles match-up. The pre-match chatter predicted a potential victory for the Germans despite Struff being ranked No. 100 in comparison with Etcheverry’s No. 60 – with Struff’s serve and forehand proving to be devastating for numerous opponents in the past. However, it was Etcheverry who served 23 aces en route to a mammoth 7-6(3) 7-6(7) win for Argentina.

In a must-win encounter for the Germans, three-time Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev rose to the occasion. The 28-year-old had to battle his way past a rallying Francisco Cerundolo to prevail with a 6-4 7-6(3) scoreline. Although there were plenty of tense exchanges and exhausting rallies, the World No. 21 Argentine couldn’t exert his dominance when it mattered most.
The deciding doubles fixture was a dramatic affair, with Krawietz/Puetz pulling off an epic comeback to win 4-6 6-4 7-6(10) in two and a half hours. Argentina opted to field a specialist pairing of Andres Molteni and Horacio Zeballos, and they started in fine fashion by putting pressure on the Germans. But as the match went on, the rallies got longer and all four players were involved.
The two combinations couldn’t be separated, and the match was set to be determined by a final set tiebreaker. Despite saving four match points, Molteni/Zeballos squandered two of their own. In the end, Krawietz/Puetz won a sensational rally with a forehand down the line pass to emerge triumphant.
An epic tie, decided by an epic match 😍
