Alexander “The Great” Volkanovksi is presently on cloud nine in his UFC career. He has become a two-time UFC Featherweight Champion in 2025. This was one of the successful flights in his life following his struggles to get back to the title.
“The Great” is already on the lookout for his next opponent inside the Octagon after he won the title for the second time. But there is one MMA fighter that he wants to fight once again in his career. That fighter is Ilia Topuria. So, what did Volk have to say about his possible fight with the ‘El Matador’ in the future? Ilia Topuria was initially a member of the UFC Featherweight Division and holder of the title. However, he vacated the title and has moved to the UFC Lightweight Division since then. This allowed Alexander Volkanovksi to regain the UFC Featherweight title at UFC 314. Alexander Volkanovksi was initially in the UFC Lightweight division before he moved down to the UFC Featherweight division.
More recently, Volk appeared at The Ariel Helwani Show, where he was questioned about Ilia Topuria. He replied –
“You’ve got to respect what he’s doing… He wants to chase the Lightweights. Let him do his thing. Maybe when I defend again and if he has to win… then we have a rematch at Lightweight. Oh man, it doesn’t get bigger than that. That’s perfect world for me”.
However, Alexander Volanovski also mentioned a few things have to happen before that match eventually happens. He is content to do his thing until that time comes. Notably, Ariel Helwani, Uncrowned and Yahoo sports posted this comment on their official Instagram pages.
Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria first faced off against each other at UFC 298 on February 17, 2024 as per the UFC official site. Volkanovksi was the reigning UFC Featherweight Champion in the fight, which he won against Max Holloway at UFC 245. Unfortunately, their fight ended in two Rounds. Topuria defeated Volkanovski through KO/TKO to become the new UFC Featherweight Champion. He then went on to have short reign with it before vacating it in February 2025.
Alexander Volkanovski has already mentioned his intentions to fight Ilia Topuria again in the future. Now, UFC fans will just have to wait and see if this fight happens down the road in the future.
