Alexander Isak Breaks Drought As Liverpool End Crisis With Win at West Ham

Liverpool ended their poor run of form in style at the London Stadium as Alexander Isak finally opened his Premier League account for the Reds, sealing a 2-0 win over West Ham United. The night carried extra emotion for the Hammers following the announcement of the passing of West Ham legend Billy Bonds. But it was Arne Slot’s side who took control and silenced the home crowd.

Slot made a bold call before kick-off by leaving Mohamed Salah out of the starting XI. The Dutch coach opted instead for a refreshed front line. The decision paid off. Florian Wirtz was given freedom to create in a central role, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai operated wide. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak led the line with hunger and purpose. Isak and Gakpo Fire Reds to Vital Victory

Liverpool controlled the game from early on, with Wirtz pulling the strings and Isak threatening repeatedly. The Swedish striker nearly broke his drought with a close-range effort that Alphonse Areola pushed away, but he would not be denied for long. On the hour mark, Gakpo flashed a cross into the box and Isak connected instinctively on the half-volley, ending a 310-minute wait for a league goal. It sparked visible relief across the Liverpool bench.

West Ham’s evening deteriorated further when Lucas Paqueta received two quick yellow cards for dissent, reducing the hosts to ten men. Liverpool punished the lapse late in stoppage time when Gakpo calmly slotted home the second goal.

The result lifted Liverpool to eighth place, only three points off the Champions League spots. More importantly, the performance will have restored some belief for the Reds after they lost nine of their previous twelve games. For big-money signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, this felt like a turning point.
