Alex de Minaur vs. Jacob Fearnley Head to Head Record, Preview and Prediction for ATP Barcelona Open 2025 Round of 16

Sankalp Harikrishnan

De Minaur is yet to reach a clay court ATP final.

After a successful outing at the Monte Carlo Masters where he reached the semifinal, World No. 7 Alex de Minaur is looking to keep up the level at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell this week. He will battle lucky loser Jacob Fearnley in the Round of 16 – a man who conquered the challenge of ousting home favourite Roberto Carballes Baena in Round-1. The gift for the winner? A potential quarterfinal meeting with World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.

Despite being a consistent performer for numerous years, Alex de Minaur is yet to reach a clay court final on the ATP Tour. The Australian has had a fairly good 2025 – he reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open as well as in Qatar, semifinals in Monte Carlo, and the final in Rotterdam. The 26-year-old has a 21-7 record this year, and beat Tomas Etcheverry in Round-1 in straight sets.

With all the talk on British tennis revolving around Jack Draper, 23-year-old Jacob Fearnley has been quietly working his way up on the circuit. Edinburgh’s son of the soil is currently ranked No. 74 in the world, and won four ATP Challengers last year. He has recorded wins over the likes of Nick Kyrgios (Australian Open) in 2025; in Round-1 at the Catalonian capital, he dominated Carballes Baena to set up this Round of 16 tussle.

A couple of weeks ago, Alex de Minaur cooked up a historic double bagel at the expense of Grigor Dimitrov in Monte Carlo. He has self-admittedly cracked the code to excelling on the red dirt, which he evidently showcased at the Principality. On the other hand, Fearnley’s high risk high reward tennis sets him up for something special at any given point of time.

Alex de Minaur vs Jacob Fearnley Barcelona Open 2025 Prediction

Despite Fearnley’s rapid rise on the ATP Tour, initial estimations suggest that it will be a relatively comfortable outing for Alex de Minaur. The endurance and shotmaking of the man who has reached the QF of all four majors will be a task for Fearnley to match. Unfortunately, despite breaking ground in Catalonia this week, the lucky loser’s journey possibly comes to an end on Thursday.
