Formula 1 Rumors- Mercedes Set to Retain George Russell for The Next Season!

Rohan Singh

Sky Sports present latest news regarding George Russell's future at Mercedes.

There were a lot of stories revolving around the contract rumors regarding Max Verstappen and George Russell. Mercedes was looking forward towards signing Max Verstappen in their team. This meant that they would part ways with their current driver, George Russell. The contract rumors and discussions involving the trio have been the spotlight of the paddock for the past couple of months.

There was a lot of surety concerning Max Verstappen’s move to Mercedes. However, a latest report has emerged in the paddock. This report contradicts the previous rumors completely. The fact that George Russell will no longer driver for Mercedes was a given according to the previous stories. Although, there seems to be a huge change in the narrative suddenly. It is also going to decide the Briton’s future in the team for a long time.

George Russell is Set to Receive a Contract Extension by Mercedes Until 2027

George Russell has been with Mercedes for a long time. They are also the managers for the driver. Russell was pretty confident when asked about a contract with Mercedes earlier on. He was sure that the team would choose him considering his performance over the past few years and the current Formula 1 season.

A report from Sky Sports has emerged in the paddock recently. It states that George Russell and Mercedes have agreed to a new contract. Russell will be staying with the team for two more years until the end of the 2027 season. Toto Wolff hinted during the Belgian Grand Prix while talking to Sky Sports that a new deal for George Russell is right around the corner.

Talking about Russell’s contract Wolff says-

“As a driver, he’s so mature and stable that I don’t think that makes any difference on performance. On the contrary, I would wish to have him in a safe place a little bit earlier. We haven’t managed to do that but I’m optimistic that he’s going to sleep well over the summer break.”

The Mercedes wants to pair George Russell and Kimi Antonelli together for a long time. The anticipations of the media about a possible pairing between Russell and Verstappen were deemed unrealistic by Toto Wolff.

Now that the Mercedes boss has spoken up about the contract situation, the stories revolving around Russell and Verstappen should subside. But, is this going to affect Verstappen’s future Formula 1 seasons? The Dutchman is in a precarious situation driving an underperforming Red Bull. He may try to switch other teams, possibly Aston Martin, who are current working with Adrian Newey.
