Rublev could be in for a tricky opening round match as his consistency has taken a hit

The number 14 seed at this year’s Wimbledon, Andrey Rublev, starts his campaign with an opening round clash against Serbian Laslo Djere. The winner of this matchup will proceed to the second round, where they will take on the winner of the match between Zizou Bergs and Lloyd Harris.

Andrey Rublev vs Laslo Djere Preview

Andrey Rublev has an 18-14 record on the year with just one title at the Qatar Open. Since then, he has managed to reach the final only once in Hamburg. Prior to Wimbledon, the Russian participated in just one grass-court tournament at the Halle Open. The fourth seed at Halle went on to lose in the second round to Tomás Martín Etcheverry.

Rublev has yet to win a title on grass in his career, but he holds a 20-11 record on the surface. This year on grass, the Russian is 1-1 heading into Wimbledon’s first round. Overall, this year, Rublev has served pretty well. He has hit 231 aces and just 70 double faults while winning 81% of his service games. However, he struggled in his return games with just 35% break point conversion and 22% return games won.

The Serb is only 8-17 on grass and 1-3 this year. This is the surface he has struggled on the most in his career. He hasn’t been as effective as Rublev has been on serve this year, with just 97 aces, 57 double faults, and a first serve percentage of 61%. However, he has converted 41% of his break points and has won 23% of his return games.

Andrey Rublev vs Laslo Djere Wimbledon Prediction

The advantage in this match clearly lies with the Russian number 14 seed. He has a far better record overall, and on grass as well. Moreover, his 4-0 record against Djere shows how comfortable he is against the Serb’s game.

Djere may have a slight chance in this match since Rublev isn’t carrying much confidence at the moment. But for that, the 30-year-old will have to start strong, as winning against the Russian over 5 sets is not going to be easy.

Match Prediction: Rublev in four sets
