Manchester United End 10-Year Winless Anfield Run with Dramatic 2-1 Win against Liverpool

In a thrilling Premier League encounter at Anfield, Manchester United finally secured a long-awaited win over arch-rivals Liverpool at their home. They overcame a decade of disappointment with a hard-fought 2-1 win. Man United struck early through Bryan Mbeumo.

They capitalised on a defensive miscommunication between Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the opening stages and took the lead within three minutes into the match. Liverpool responded in the 78th minute when Cody Gakpo tapped in from a Federico Chiesa cross.

However, the decisive moment arrived late when United captain Harry Maguire met a superb volleyed delivery from Bruno Fernandes to head home the winner. This win ends United’s nine-game winless streak at Anfield (five draws, four defeats). It also marks a significant milestone for manager Rúben Amorim.

What it Means for Liverpool and Manchester United

For United, this result is a morale-boosting statement. The club had been unable to secure an away win on Anfield since January 2016. Under Amorim, back-to-back league wins had previously eluded them until now. After the match, Man United coach Amorim said:

“I think that was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. We fought for every ball… the spirit was there and that is the most important thing.” On the flip side, Liverpool’s slide deepened. They’ve now lost four consecutive matches across all competitions. The champions’ defence appeared brittle and unsettled.

Van Dijk admitted that the team’s decision-making was ‘too rushed’ and highlighted the openness when they lost possession, especially early in the match. Manager Arne Slot was left to ponder a run of three straight league defeats at home. It has been an uncomfortable reality for a squad built with high expectations.

What’s Next for Both Teams

Liverpool’s frustrated attacking efforts were clear. Gakpo struck the woodwork three times and squandered a close-range header deep into added time, effectively sealing their fate. Man United, by contrast, carved out chances of their own and showed maturity in defence and transition.
