Under new boss Arne Slot, the Reds claimed the league crown with four games to spare at the end of the season. Despite early setbacks and questions over Slot’s ability to manage in Premier League, Liverpool dug deep and delivered when it mattered most.

Former Liverpool star and Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy has highlighted the three turning points that he believes made all the difference in a dramatic and memorable campaign. As Murphy explains, these were the games that reminded everyone why this Liverpool side was never to be written off.

1. AC Milan 1-3 Liverpool (17 September 2024)

Coming on the back of a loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield, Liverpool responded with authority at the San Siro. Despite going behind within the first three minutes to a Christian Pulisic strike, the Reds regrouped and priduced a powerful statement of intent. Ibrahima Konate’s header brought Liverpool level before Virgil van Dijk nodded them into the lead just before halftime. In the second half, Cody Gakpo’s electric run ended with a pinpoint assist to Dominik Szoboszlai, who sealed a comprehensive win.

For Danny Murphy, this performance wasn’t just about three points in Europe, it was about Liverpool finding their identity. “A phenomenal display of desire, power and intelligent football,” Murphy said. “That was the moment you felt this team was going to be a force.”

2. Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool (22 December 2024)

A ruthless Liverpool dismantled Spurs with a six-goal masterclass in North London just days before Christmas. Injuries had taken a toll on Tottenham, but Slot’s side showed no mercy with standout performances from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.

Salah netted twice and also entered the club’s history books, surpassing Billy Liddell to become the fourth-highest scorer in Liverpool history. Spurs, exhausted from their recent cup run, were torn apart by Liverpool’s relentless pressing and constant attacks.

Danny Murphy described Liverpool’s performance in that game as “powerful, clever, and electric.” He added, “When I left the stadium that night, I thought: this Liverpool team is going to take some stopping.”

3. Liverpool 1-0 Everton (2 April 2025)

Perhaps the most understated but mentally crucial of the three was the Merseyside Derby in April. Liverpool were coming on the back of back-to-back setbacks – a Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle and a Champions League exit to PSG.

But Liverpool dug deep. Against a stubborn Everton defence, it was Diogo Jota who delivered the decisive moment of the game. The Portugese striker weaved through defenders after a neat backheel from Luis Diaz to score the only goal of the game.

Murphy viewed this game as the psychological turning point. “There was a narrative that Liverpool were fatiguing,” he noted. “But that professional 1-0 win silenced the noise. Great win, three points, the lead was cemented. I thought that was a really professional performance to get that job done ”
