Michael Porter Jr.
Michael Lamar Porter Jr. is an American professional basketball player, born on June 29, 1998, in Columbia, Missouri. Known for his height, shooting ability, and offensive potential, he has established himself as a prominent forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Early Life and High School Career
Porter Jr. was born into a family deeply connected to basketball. His father, Michael Porter Sr., is a former player and coach, and his younger brother, Jontay Porter, is also a professional player.
His High School career was spectacular, being considered one of the top prospects in his class (2017). He initially played at Father Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia, Missouri, before transferring to Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington. In his senior year (2016-2017), he led Nathan Hale to a perfect 29-0 record, winning the Washington Class 3A state title. His performances earned him prestigious awards, such as the McDonald’s All-American Game MVP, the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
After High School, Porter Jr. initially committed to the University of Washington but changed his decision to play for the University of Missouri (Mizzou), where his father had been hired as an assistant coach. His time in college basketball was brief and marked by an injury. In the very first game of the 2017-2018 season, Porter Jr. suffered a back injury. He underwent a microdiscectomy and missed almost the entire season, returning only for conference tournament and March Madness games, limiting his collegiate experience.
Professional Career in the NBA
Despite the back injury that raised concerns, Michael Porter Jr. was highly rated in the 2018 NBA Draft. He was selected by the Denver Nuggets as the 14th overall pick.
Denver Nuggets (2018–2025)
Porter Jr.’s first season (2018-2019) in the NBA was entirely dedicated to recovering from his back surgery, and he did not play any games. This precaution proved fundamental to his longevity.
His debut occurred in the 2019-2020 season. The following season (2020-2021), he established himself as a starter and a crucial piece in the Nuggets’ offense, demonstrating his ability to score at high volume, especially with his three-point shot.
However, back injuries became a problem again in the 2021-2022 season, limiting him to just nine games before undergoing another surgery.
Michael Porter Jr. returned strongly in the 2022-2023 season. Acting as the third offensive pillar alongside Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, he contributed significantly to the Nuggets’ historic campaign. In 2023, he won his first and only NBA title, with the Denver Nuggets defeating the Miami Heat in the Finals.
Brooklyn Nets (2025–present)
In 2025, Michael Porter Jr. was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he continues his NBA career, taking on a leadership role and remaining one of the most talented forwards in the league.
Personal Life
Michael Porter Jr. is Christian and comes from a large family with seven siblings, including fellow NBA player Jontay Porter. He has shown interest in plant-based diets, having been a vegetarian and, for a period, a raw vegan, although he later abandoned these regimes.
Despite facing significant adversity related to injuries early in his career, Michael Porter Jr. managed to bounce back and prove his worth, becoming an NBA champion and an elite offensive threat.
