Brooklyn Nets’ Michael Porter Jr. Reveals He May Call Time on his NBA Career Sooner than Expected

Michael Porter Jr. will embark on a new journey with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2025-26 season following his trade from the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets sent him to the Nets in exchange for Cameron Johnson during the 2025 free agency. A key piece of the Nuggets’ 2023 championship team, fans and pundits expect him to continue to display the same kind of prowess with the new team. The star forward is just 27 years old and there is so much basketball left in him right now. However, it seems that he is already questioning his stay in the NBA, and might consider calling time on his career sooner than later.

During the Media Day, he admitted that the toll of multiple back surgeries, along with the hustle and grind has forced him to take his career one year at a time. “Because of the injuries and stuff, I don’t know how much longer I really want to play,” the 6’10” forward stated.

“Like, I want to play as long as I can. But people don’t understand the things I’ve got to go through on a daily basis—just to get out on the court and play with the best athletes in the world.”

He added, “I decided: all I’m going to do is take it a year at a time. So I’m committed to basketball and putting my all into it for the next year. And then after that, I’m gonna reevaluate.”

It hasn’t been an easy journey for Porter, who was a 14th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. His entire rookie season was wiped due to a second back surgery. During the sophomore season, he put his scoring ability on display but ended up missing 17 games.

The number went up to 72 games in his third season due to another back injury. The Missouri alum bounced back in the fourth season and played 62 games. In the 2023-24 season, he played 81 games. He finished the 2024-25 season with an average of 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

Michael Porter Jr. Opens Up on his New Role in Brooklyn Nets

Michael Porter Jr. also opened up on the role he would assume with the Brooklyn Nets. He aims to expand his game and showcase his potential with a new approach and fresh mindset.

Speaking about his new role, the star player said, “They are gonna see me in a different role.” He added, “I am looking forward to explore my game a little bit. Jordi (Jordi Fernandez) has already told me some of the things, some of the positions he wants to see me in. They are gonna work with me and it’s gonna be fun to explore that.”

Porter holds a chance to establish himself as the Nets’ go-to scorer. If things go well and he avoids injuries, it could help him expand his career. It seems that he is currently focused on improving his scoring and decision-making as he steps into leadership shoes at the Nets.

He is poised for a remarkable debut season with his new team, and it could literally define his career. However, it would all depend on how quickly he adapts to his new role and leads younger players while adding to the tally.

The Nets start the NBA 2025 preseason against the Phoenix Suns on October 10 at the Venetian Arena in Macau. Their regular season kicks off on October 22 against the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center.
