AC Milan Book Coppa Italia Final Spot With Derby Triumph Over Inter

The derby win offered a glimmer of hope in what has otherwise been a difficult season for AC Milan.

AC Milan kept their silverware hopes alive with a commanding 3-0 win over Inter Milan in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final, sealing a 4-1 aggregate victory. AC Milan delivered a commanding display throughout the match to secure their first Coppa Italia final appearance since the 2017/18 season.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the tie was finely poised, but Luka Jovic emerged as the hero for the Rossoneri. The Serbian striker continued his recent scoring form with a well-taken brace. He opened the scoring nine minutes before the break, heading in a precise cross to give Milan the lead on the night and in the tie.

Just four minutes into the second half, Jovic struck again as he reacted quickest to a flicked-on corner and converted from close range. The brace took his tally to four goals in his last five games, a significant turnaround for the striker, who had struggled for goals earlier in the year.

Inter threatened to pull one back, but Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was alert to deny Stefan de Vrij with a crucial save. Milan then sealed the win in the dying moments through Tijjani Reijnders, who calmly slotted home to put the result beyond doubt.

It was the fifth time this season that Inter couldn’t beat Milan. In fact, they lost three of those five games, including the Supercoppa Italiana final back in January.

The win offered a glimmer of hope in what has otherwise been a difficult season for AC Milan. Currently sitting ninth in Serie A and eliminated from the Champions League, the Coppa Italia now presents their last shot at silverware. Meanwhile, for Inter, the loss dashed hopes of a treble. Simone Inzaghi’s side still lead the Serie A table and are in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

AC Milan will now await the winner of the other semi-final, where Bologna hold a 3-0 advantage over Empoli ahead of the second leg on Thursday.
