Exploring AC Milan’s Historic Success in the Coppa Italia and Their Rivalry With Inter Milan.
AC Milan, one of Italy’s most successful and famed football clubs, boast a rich history filled with domestic and international success. Their triumphs in Serie A and European competitions are well-known. However, looking at their history in Coppa Italia, it has not been smooth sailing for the Milan side.
As the Rossoneri prepare for a decisive clash in the 2025 edition, attention turns to their past accomplishments and aspirations in the Coppa Italia. AC Milan’s 2025 Coppa Italia campaign has been marked by strong performances. They registered a 3-1 quarter-final win over Roma, and a 4-1 semi-final win against arch-rivals Inter Milan on aggregate.

The Rossoneri now face Bologna in the finals. This is a season-defining game for Milan considering their struggling league form. With European qualification on the line, Milan will aim to overcome Bologna, who they’ve already defeated only a few days ago to get their hands on the trophy. However, the record is even this season as Bologna defeated them back in February. Bologna are still in the backfoot with a declining form in recent days.

AC Milan have won the Coppa Italia five times in their history. Their first triumph came in the 1966-67 season. This maiden cup win was followed by close wins in 1972, 1973, and 1977. After decades-long gap, they got their hands on the trophy again in 2003. And this was their most recent success in the competitions history. They defeated Roma that year in a two-legged final.
It has been over two decades now that the Rossoneri haven’t been able to get their hands on the title. Their current campaign is now an opportunity to end a 22-year drought. It’s evident that despite their status as one of Italy’s top clubs, the Rossoneri have found success in this competition relatively elusive compared to their achievements in Serie A and Europe.
Juventus are the undisputed kings of the Coppa Italia, having lifted the trophy a record 15 times. Their dominance in the competition spans decades. Their first title came back in 1938 and the most recent in 2021. The Bianconeri’s consistent performance, especially their most recent win in the domestic cup underscores their strength in the midst of tumultuous times.
Following Juventus are AS Roma and Inter Milan, each of whom have nine titles. AC Milan, with five wins, trail these rivals but remain a significant force. The Rossoneri’s current run offers them a chance to close the gap and assert themselves once again in a competition they haven’t conquered in over two decades.
