The Dallas Cowboys had a horrible season last year finishing with a 7-10 record and falling to third place in the NFC East behind the Eagles and Commanders. They missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2020 season and looked all out of sorts for the majority of the year.

A huge upset in week 2 was a shocking result as the New Orleans Saints gave them a 44-19 beatdown, following which they lost to the Ravens in week 3 to start the season 0-2 at home. A run of 5 straight losses from week 6 meant that Dallas was 3-7 at one point of the season, and there was no coming back.

Much of the Cowboys’ struggles in the later half of the season could be attributed to the hamstring injury to quarterback Dak Prescott as he missed out the remainder of the season after just 8 games. Nevertheless, even when Prescott played, Dallas was 3-5. What was even more disappointing was the fact that the Cowboys signed big contracts with Prescott and WR1 CeeDee Lamb prior to the start of last season, but had nothing to show for it.

The Cowboys need to regroup quickly now. Defending Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders are both looking strong and if Dallas doesn’t improve, they could very well be out of the postseason yet again.

The Dallas Cowboys have a total of 10 draft picks as of now. They will have selections in all but round 4. The Cowboys will be busy in round 5 with 3 picks, two of them as compensatory selections. They have 4 own picks, 3 compensatory picks, and 3 from trades.

Positional Needs for the Cowboys

One of the areas the Cowboys need to add depth is the quarterback room. They currently have only Dak Prescott and Will Grier on the team after Cooper Rush has left to backup Lamar Jackson in Baltimore and Trey Lance is now a free agent. Dallas may bring Lance back, but if they don’t find another quarterback, then they may have to settle for one in the draft.

Another position that needs a depth piece is the cornerback. In Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland, Dallas has two starting quality corners, but what happens when one of them gets injured? Diggs has missed several games in the past two seasons due to injury, while Bland missed the first 10 games of the 2024 season.

Dallas’ first-round pick sits at number 12 which is a good spot to find a quality player. This draft is considered to have several decent cornerbacks so the Cowboys should be able to land a quality player at the position if they choose to do so.
