Top Draft Prospect Shedeur Sanders Opts Out of NFL Combine Workout, To Throw At Colorado Pro Day Instead

Devavrat Kulkarni

Shedeur Sanders will partake in only media and team interviews at the NFL Combine

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders will be one of the top prospects at the NFL Draft this year. Son of former NFL legend and Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, Shedeur has gained valuable lessons as a professional football player from his early childhood. Thus, this should not come as a surprise that the highly touted quarterback has decided to skip the throwing sessions at this year’s NFL Combine.

Sanders has opted instead to throw at his Colorado Pro Day where he will be throwing to receivers he has good chemistry with. Sanders is one of the top prospects this year and is more or less a lock to be selected in the top 5. This year’s quarterback class is considered to be one of the weaker ones with Sanders and Cam Ward being the hot favorites for the number one overall pick.

Judging by the media’s take, it could be a toss-up between the two with both signal callers having their own share of supporters, however, Ward may be perceived as the slight favorite. As the former Buffaloes’ starter has decided against throwing at the Combine, he will spend his time interviewing with teams as he gets ready for the professional life ahead.

Sanders Following Similar Path Of His Predecessors

In the recent past many top draft prospects have started to skip some of the workouts at the NFL Combine which doesn’t make this news about Shedeur Sanders anything strange. In fact, last year, both Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels didn’t throw at the Combine but went on to throw at their respective Pro Days at USC and LSU. Both of them went number 1 and 2 in the 2024 NFL draft which just goes to show that the Combine results aren’t everything.

Sanders has chosen to tread on a similar path as he intends to throw at his Pro Day in Colorado while skipping the session during the upcoming Combine. Nowadays, many top players believe that workouts at the Combine will have no effect on boosting their draft stock and instead focus on other things such as interviews, Pro Days, and or preparing for life in the professional world.

Shedeur Sanders Stats in 2024

Sanders began the 2024 season as a senior and the starting quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes playing under his father Deion Sanders as the Head Coach. It was a similar situation in 2023 when Sanders, then a junior, took over the Buffaloes offense. While Colorado finished 4-7 in 2023, Sanders led his team to a more respectable 9-4 record in 2024.

Sanders also led the team to the Alamo Bowl and although the Buffaloes lost to the BYU Cougars, the Texas native threw for 4,134 yards on a completion rate of 74 over the course of the year. He threw 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on his way to winning the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as well as the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
