Devonta Smith Becomes One of the 5 Players To Win A National Championship, Heisman And A Super Bowl

With the Super Bowl win DeVonta Smith equals a rare feat

Philadelphia Eagles’ wideout, DeVonta Smith is now a Super Bowl Champion having won Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith has been an important member of the Eagles wide receiver room ever since he was drafted by the team 10th overall in 2021.

Smith led all receivers on the Eagles roster in their dominating victory over the Chiefs, catching 4 passes for 69 yards including a long 46-touchdown reception. With his Super Bowl win, Smith entered rarefied company as he joined a select group of players to have won three big trophies in the sport of American football.

Devonta Smith Caps Off Super Bowl Win To Enter Elite Company

Eagles’ wide receiver DeVonta Smith, following his Super Bowl win over the Chiefs entered a select group of players who have all won the National Championship, the Heisman Trophy, and the Super Bowl.

While the National Championship and the Heisman are both collegiate awards, the Super Bowl is the professional league. However, winning the National Championship in college is also considered to be a significant accomplishment as many of the players from that team get drafted into the professional league as they continue their dream of making it big in the NFL.

Furthermore, the Heisman is an individual award handed out annually to the best college player in that season. Winning the Heisman as a wide receiver is an extremely difficult task as there have been only 4 players to achieve this as of 2025, with Smith being one of them.

Other Players To Have Won the National Championship, Heisman, And A Super Bowl

With the exclusion of DeVonta Smith, there are four more players to have achieved this trifecta.

Tony Dorsett

Running back Tony Dorsett who played most of his career playing for the Dallas Cowboys became the first-ever player to win the National Championship, the Heisman Trophy, and the Super Bowl in 1977.

Dorsett, who played his college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers, was instrumental in leading the team to the National Championship in 1976 in a season where he rushed for 2,150 yards as a senior. The same year, he picked up the Heisman on account of his remarkable performance.

The very next year, in 1977 as a rookie, Dorsett won the Super Bowl with the Cowboys when they defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII.

Marcus Allen

The next player to achieve this feat was another running back, Marcus Allen. Allen played 16 years in the NFL, primarily with the Los Angeles Raiders followed by five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He won the National Championship Trophy with the University of South California Trojans’ football team in 1978. This was recognized by the coaches’ poll. Allen, a freshman then, played as the backup running back.

In 1981, he won the Heisman Trophy on the back of a big season as he rushed for 2,342 yards as a senior.

His Super Bowl win came in Super Bowl XVIII when the Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins. Incidentally, Allen also won the Super Bowl MVP with his monumental effort of 191 rushing yards from 20 carries for an average of 9.55 yards per carry along with 2 rushing touchdowns.

Charles Woodson

The third player to enter this special list was cornerback and safety Charles Woodson. Woodson played for two teams in his career, the Oakland Raiders and the Green Bay Packers. He spent the first 14 seasons of his career playing the cornerback position but finished his career playing safety for four years.

Woodson is the only defensive player in the history of collegiate football to have won the Heisman Trophy. Since then, only Travis Hunter has won the trophy in 2024 but he was a two-way player who played cornerback and wide receiver.

Woodson won his Heisman in 1997 in the same year he won a National Championship with the Michigan Wolverines.

The highly decorated defender won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers when they came out on top against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

Reggie Bush

The last player to have won all three trophies before Smith was running back Reggie Bush who played for 5 different teams but mostly with the New Orleans Saints.

Bush was a 2-time National Champion winning it back-to-back with the USC Trojans in 2003 and 2004. However, his Heisman-winning season was in 2005 when he rushed for 1,740 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. He also contributed 481 yards as a receiver and was used in punt and kickoff returns as well.

Bush’s Super Bowl win came with the New Orleans Saints when they defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
