Will We See A Cooper Kupp And Jared Goff Reunion In Detroit?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Will Cooper Kupp make his way to Detroit this offseason

The Los Angeles Rams have supposedly decided to move on from their star wideout Cooper Kupp. This comes quite as a surprise given that not too long ago Kupp was at the forefront of a Super Bowl victory for the Rams. In fact, he was so dominant that he even won the Triple Crown as he led the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns that year.

Then, with the addition of Puka Nacua and his strong relationship with quarterback Matthew Stafford also working in favor of the Rams, this news raises more questions. One possible explanation for this could be his lack of playtime over the past three seasons due to various injuries keeping him on the sidelines. Nevertheless, the trade news has been confirmed by Kupp himself on his Twitter handle which means he will now be getting ready for the next chapter in his career.

Cooper Kupp-Jared Goff Reunion On The Cards!

At 31 years old, Kupp should have quite a few decent suitors to his name, but one team that comes to mind is the Detroit Lions. This destination makes a lot of sense for multiple factors but the most important one is that he could team up once again with Jared Goff, his former quarterback in LA. Should Kupp land in Detroit, it won’t take long for the duo to strike up a good chemistry once again.

During their time in LA, the two enjoyed a good stint together, leading the Rams to the postseason in three of the four seasons. Although they did not achieve postseason success, their partnership will without a doubt help out the Lions offense.

Cooper Kupp-Jared Goff Stats While Playing Together

Before Goff was traded to the Lions, he and Kupp played together in LA for 4 seasons from 2017 to 2020. When the two were on the field at the same time, Cooper Kupp has caught 288 receptions for 3,570 yards including 24 touchdowns in 54 games.  Unfortunately, though, the two have only featured in 2 playoff games together and Kupp has caught 12 passes for 147 yards and a single touchdown.

How Will Cooper Kupp Fit into the Lions Offense?

Detroit has been playing high-quality football for the past couple of seasons and their offense is a high-octane one. They have a decent receiving core and a good running game to go along with it.

Most of the offense will still run through the Lions’ WR1, Amon-Ra St. Brown as it has been functioning over the past few seasons. However, with wideout Tim Patrick becoming a free agent, Kupp could add the necessary depth to the receivers’ room alongside Jameson Williams and St. Brown. Furthermore, tight end Sam LaPorta is also a reliable pass catcher which means the overall offense will be boosted with the presence of an experienced pass catcher.

I am a content writer for the NFL team. I joined The Playoffs recently at the beginning of February after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. However, this is a career change for me as previously I used to be a French to English translator. I started out in the sports media field because of two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis as well as my passion for writing. I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unites and entertains like nothing else!
