Seattle forward Jared McCann is drawing attention as a potential trade target, sparking speculation ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
Rumors have been swirling around Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann as the NHL trade deadline approaches. Earlier this week, Sportsnet’s Jacob Stoller reported that Seattle might be open to moving McCann. However, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman later clarified on his 32 Thoughts podcast that while teams have been reaching out about McCann, the Kraken themselves are not actively shopping him.
It’s easy to see why contenders are interested. McCann, Seattle’s all-time leading scorer, has racked up 110 goals and 224 points in 290 games since being selected in the 2021 NHL expansion draft. At just $5 million per season through 2027, he’s a top-six forward on a team-friendly deal—exactly the kind of player playoff-bound teams covet.

Despite the interest, prying McCann away won’t be easy. The Kraken aren’t actively looking to trade him, and it would likely take a massive offer to convince them otherwise. While no specific teams were mentioned by Friedman, it has been speculated that the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals could be potential landing spots.

However, history suggests the Kraken are unlikely to trade within their division. Seattle has never made a major deal with a Pacific Division rival, making a move to Vancouver seem improbable. Meanwhile, Washington faces its hurdles, with limited cap space—just $3.65 million available, even with $17 million on LTIR. The Capitals would need to send a roster player back, but are they willing to part with key pieces like Brandon Duhaime, Lars Eller, Nic Dowd, or Martin Fehervary?
While McCann is drawing significant trade interest, a deal doesn’t seem imminent. Unless a team makes a staggering offer, the Kraken are likely to hold onto their star forward as they continue building for the future.
