Brad Marchand Hopes to Stay with Bruins Long-Term

Boston’s captain expresses his desire to remain with the Bruins.

With the March 7 trade deadline approaching, the Boston Bruins find themselves in a unique position—they could be sellers for the first time in a decade. Despite being just one point out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot, their playoff chances sit at a mere 14.9%, according to MoneyPuck, ranking sixth lowest in the East.

Amidst the uncertainty, speculation has emerged about the future of team captain Brad Marchand. Now in the final year of his eight-year, $49 million contract extension signed in 2016, Marchand could be a prime rental option if the Bruins decide to entertain trade offers. Though his offensive production has dipped slightly this season—his points per game dropping from 67 to 63 compared to last year—he remains a key contributor, tallying 20 goals and 44 points in 57 games.

On the podcast What Chaos!, hosts D.J. Bean and Pete Blackburn asked Marchand directly about the trade rumors. His response? “Obviously, it would be very weird. I think I would feel very weird, probably a little lost. But I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it before. And I don’t really think about it, because it’s not something that I really see happening.”

Despite the chatter, Marchand made it clear he wants to stay in Boston. “My goal is to play here forever. I love it here, and my family obviously loves it here. It’s all I know, and what I love most about it is the expectations—internally, from management, ownership, and the team—to be competitive every year. That’s what you want to be part of.”

However, history shows that loyalty doesn’t always dictate front-office decisions. The Bruins have moved on from long-time players before, including Milan Lucic and Dougie Hamilton at the 2015 NHL Draft, letting captain Zdeno Chara walk in free agency after the 2019-20 season, and even trading goaltender Linus Ullmark to a division rival last summer.

While Marchand hopes to remain a Bruin for life, the team’s front office may have other plans for his future.
